Here's my first turning. A co-worker that I have made a few things for told me last week that she has an old bowl that use to be like a big mortar/pestle set and was looking for a large 'masher' .. so for lack of something better to start with, here it is. Took a 14" chunk from a large oak limb that fell this past storm season, chucked it up ... and here it is!

(BTW, I just ordered a starter kit of Benjamins from PSI so I have something to turn a bowl soon )

Thanks for getting me started ....

Hey you gotta make yourself a bonker for around the lathe.... and keep it!
I shudder everytime I look at the 1st one (pine) and all the endgrain tearouts....but it bonks just fine thank you..... and keeps me in touch with where I started from!
Carry on.... Nice job too!

Most people call this a "bonker". But I have always prefered the more dignified "whacker". But you have introduced a new term here that I like even better... masher. So let me say... nice masher.

Yeah it was fun .... poor technique lead to a little larger groove in the barrell and a little thinner handle :D

Now I have a better feel for how to hold the cutting edge on the little skew that I have.

A guy at work wants a true Bonker ... since this was for a girl, I figured I'd give it a more 'feminine' name :)

You got to love it when a plan comes together.

That's the best looking masher I've ever seen. OK... It's the only masher I've ever seen, but it is nice. Welcome to your new addiction!

Nice one!! Notice I didn't say, "nice masher/whacker/Bonker"... What ever you call it, it is the one that got you started... so, you didn't hear it from me... but that sucking sound is the V-o-r-t-e-x.... and you are now about dead center... :D:D:D

......... I couldnt give it up. It wasnt as rustic as she needed ( I never saw the matching Dough Bowl ) ... but now I have a better idea for what will work, so this 'masher' goes on a rack/hanger/display so I can remember where I started ....
