Here's a little HF I turned last week. The wood is Australian resin burl from Isaac Rapelje. It measures a little over 5 by a little over three inches I'd guess. Finished with a couple of coats of polymerized tung oil.

I love pieces like this where every side gives you a different look. Comments and criticism always appreciated.

David, I had given a lot of thought to getting that burl, and when you bought it I really was looking forward to seeing it turned. You really did a great job with this one - thanks for posting!!

I knew you got the other chunk of this, and I've been looking forward to seeing what you come up with. It's easier to turn(ie. not as hard) compared to most of the other Aussie stuff that I've played with.

I've tried turning some of that stuff so I'm more than a little impressed that you could get something that nice out of it!

Great piece of down-under wood that you did a very nice turning. The gain reveals some pattern but also primitive markings and erosion effects.

Very nice, David. That is some unusual looking wood and a nice little hollow form that you made with it.

Very sweet piece of wood there David, and you did a great job on the hollow form. It just begs to be picked up and studied, a very tactile look. Well done.

Great job on just keeping that one together...looks super well done.

If you're like me, I love pieces like this...they don't require the blow out of chips while hollowing and it's easy to see how your thickness is going once you get to the voids.

I like the lack of perfect roundness at the opening too...really adds to the feeling that this was found in some archaeological dig or something.

Well done!

So David, what kind of rock is that? I didn't know you could turn rock.
Just kidding, of course. That is some unusual wood. Nice form and craftsmanship, too. thanks for sharing it.

David,
That's just awesome! If you've run out of shelf space for all your little beauties, I'd be proud to display this one at home or work.... let me know!

Resinous burls are my favourite to turn, a lot more forgiving than the solid variety.

Nicely done, well finished and I like the shape.

David, Everytime I see any Aussie burls turned, it makes me want to fulfill my dream of going to Australia! They have some of the most diverse offerings of wood there that it would be like heaven for a turner! That being said you did a wonderful job on what looks like some burl that could come apart at any second. Does it turn funny with the pitch and different density of wood? I think we need to get together an SMC junket to the land down under with a ship that will bring us back a boat load of wood! Know any one with a big yacht? My buddy is a ships captain up to 100 ton vessels, sounds like a great adventure! That is my inner child rising to the surface, I better get out in the shop I get carried away on the computer some times!

Great little turning,

Jeff

I love it, David. Is that Resin Eucalyptus? I've got a very small piece that a friend sent me, and I don't know what to do with it. It looks like that same wood.
Very nicely done!!
