View Full Version : Black Walnut bowl with a knot.

I finished this little Black Walnut bowl in the last few days, I had it rough turned a few years ago, it was turned from a pice with a knot in it, I centered the knot into the bottom of the bowl and it stayed fine without splitting, with just short periods to turn this and a couple others were just the right size to work on :).
It has a couple 3 coats of polymerized tung oil on it, and is pretty thin all over.
Any and all comments are welcome as always :)

Leo, as usual, very nice work. I like making this size as I learn and experiment. Very nice piece of wood and clever placement of the knot!

Sweet, Leo. The way the grain works when you look down at the inside of the bowl is awesome.

Thank you Mike:), I was happy there was no bark inclusion when I roughed it out, and happy the knot on the side didn't open up, that was the tricky one.

Leo, that bowl is a beauty

Thank you David :).

Nice work, Leo - bet that bottom was fun to finish off!!:D Love the walnut!

Thanks John :), actually it wasn't the knot that gave me trouble, the wood around it being side grain did tear a little on one side but taking another very light cut made it nearly perfect and it all sanded out very well, and looks quite nice and smooth, but I was most pleased with the shape, like that quite a bit.

Your usual fine work is evident in this piece.

Thank you for your comment Bill :D.

Knotty, but very nice! :D

Thanks Bob :)

I like what you did. I think it was pretty daring to have the knot at the bottom like that.

Cool.

Thank you Mike :D, the Walnut does look good for something like this I agree.

"Graceful" is the word that comes to my mind when I look at it. Very pretty.

Thanks for Commenting Cathy :), It is one of my favorite shapes, looks good on a smaller piece I think.

Sweet, Leo. The way the grain works when you look down at the inside of the bowl is awesome.

Very pretty bowl Leo! Great job on getting those knots to cut and not tear out!

Hi Steve, thank you :D, the knots didn't give me much trouble Steve, it was the wood around the bottom knot that did give me a little tear-out first try with the finishing cut, as the knot sits in there on a angle, the wood on one side of it did like to lift, (had noticed this already when I started to true the bowl up) but a second very fine cut cleaned it up and then it all sanded just very nice and smooth.

Thank you Paul :), I am pleased with the outcome :D

I like what you did. I think it was pretty daring to have the knot at the bottom like that.

Cool.

Thanks Jon :), I wasn't too afraid of the one in the bottom, it was the other end of the branch where it comes out of the side that I thought could give me trouble by pulling the piece al out of shape and split it apart

Beautiful craftsmanship on this bowl, Leo! I like the rim treatment!! Finish looks superb!

Thank You Allen :), I am happy with it, but it is nowhere near as nice as your "flower" piece before it flew apart.

Great shape Leo!

Do you do anything after the tung oil?

Thanks Pete :D, I did buff the Tung with rouge and diamond a little as the finish is still quite soft after only a couple of days setting up.
Other than that, I normally don't do anything else.

Great job on the bowl Leo! I love the shape!

Thank you Nathan :), I do to :)
