Latest effort.
Walnut
slightly larger than 15" x 5"
finished with walnut oil and beeswax
Decided to bead the whole outside. Makes for a slightly heavier bowl, but so far family and friends claim to like the look and feel.
C&C welcome
Thanks!

Sean, this may be the best bowl I have seen from you!!! I love this one. Very well done, and just a perfect form. The uniformity you achieved with the beads is fantastic. The beautiful walnut certainly doesn't hurt either.

Sean,
that is a beauty.Like everybody else has said,it has everything going for it.The beading works on that bowl real well. The inside edge treatment makes for a great transition. Just all around nice.Looks like you did the beading with a metal working lathe. What did you use?

Wow, you guys are very nice. Thank you.

Robert, I don't have any firm plans. I have a couple friends and relatives who basically said "the bigger the better." Let's see if they really meant it!

Greg, I do all my beads on spindle work with skews and spindle gouges, but for these, I used a scraper type tool fashioned from an old carbon steel tool I picked up somewhere. It caused some tearout in a coule of places, but nothing too deep. In short, it was nothing very hard to do or that required much skill.

Really nice work Sean. In the B/W picture I like how you see the ghost lines of the grain of the walnut vs. the horizontal lines of the beading. How thick did the final product end up?

The beading and form combined into one very nice piece. The precision of your tools skills is evident in the uniformity of the beading.

Very nice, Sean. The bowl itself is great, and I like the inclusion of the B&W photos as well. I think the potential recipients may be fighting over who gets this one... How do I get my name on that list?

Really nice Sean. I'd like a close look at the bottom. Great beads and beautiful wood.

Sure, here's some shots of the bottom inside and out. I hope they show what you hoped to see:

How thick did the final product end up?

About 1/2 an inch throughout most of the bowl - a bit thicker at the rim. In order to keep a large form strong with all those grooves, I figured I should err a tad on the thick side. If I was willing to be more patient with caliper checks, I might have gone a bit thinner. It was one of those things where you kind of say to yourself after you been at this awhile - "nope, one more pass if likely a bad idea."

Sean,
What a beautiful bowl. Also, what great tool control in the beading. It has made a good bowl, great, with the added beading. And, let's face it, who doesn't love Walnut? Well Done.
