This tree was blown down by a tornado on May 3, 2008. I cut and hauled the wood shortly thereafter. It sat in my yard for a month or three before I got this bowl roughed out. It soaked in DNA for a day and then has sat in my shop drying until tonight. I left it sitting because there was some ringshake in the bottom of the bowl and I was afraid it wouldn't survive - and I wasn't too crazy about takin' one on the chin. Tonight I decided to give it a try and it made it. I filled the gaps in the bottom of the bowl with sanding dust and CA. It ended up 14" x 10-1/2" x 6-1/2".

I gave the history of this bowl for a few reasons, but for one in particular. The tree went down in May, I cut it up sometime around the end of May to the first of June, then the DNA bath, then sittin' on the shelf in my shop for over two years. I finished this bowl tonight without any CA on the bark and it held tight and did just fine. Not saying every piece will do that... just sayin'...;)

Nice story and a great finished piece. I'd love to see this one in a year or ten.

Pretty NE Mark! Like David, I 'd like to see a picture of this after it's had a year or more to "age" the wood. The color tone changes is what I 'd be interested in seeing.

Love the outside curve. Ever so slightly arcing outwards at the top - just right! Also, the photos are excellent! Light and shadows are dealt with well, and the top of the background fades to dark. Well done!

Great bowl, love the natural edge, and ... so how did you take those photos?

Mark, you are absolutely the king of NE bowls!! I loved the ash series, but this one has some seriously great color to it. And, as the others commented, in a few years, it will be even better.

Really surprised at the bark staying put, and I am sure you were, too!

I use a photo cube to diffuse the light with a gradient background.

An inspection of the bark was one of the main things that led to me attempting to finish turn the bowl. The bark was tight all the way around. So I wasn't sure if it would hold, but I honestly wasn't surprised. I will admit that I left the walls a bit thicker than normal because I didn't want to push my luck...;)

Great looking bowl Mark. Sizes can be so deceptive with nothing to compare to in a photo. Thanks for posting.

Real pretty bowl Mark. NE bowls can be a challenge but obviously not for you.

Doesn't seem to matter what wood you tackle - all of your NE bowls turn out great!
