This is white ash, acquired from a craigslist ad for free wood! The homeowner took out a couple trees that were leaning over their home, in hopes that they wouldn't end up a future homeowners insurance claim. I have a "thankyou" gift for them, though they said it was unnecessary. The pieces from around the base "buttresses" were quite curly. Truly beautiful wood! One thing I learned while turning it was the color change that ash makes while being turned; it goes pink, then eventually back to white. I don't know what caused the change, but I definitely didn't imagine it. I just wish I'd had a camera at the time. The pics were with a digital SLR camera, but I don't have a real photo backdrop setup. Sorry about the glare.

Fantastic wood, and a beautiful bowl! I have noticed ash frequently exhibits curl, and this is a very nice piece!

Yup like is said already a few times, beautiful job on the bark and very nice wood, as for the glare, it shows that the wood is finished and smooth, thanks Nathan for showing, bet the bowl is going to be treasured.

I can't add any new phrases of awe. It has all been said. I can only say +1 to everything already said.

To me, most NE bowls always look more or less the same. But this one has something that takes it "over the top". It's beautiful!

Thanks for the compliments everyone! The bark was tough! I really wanted to keep it, so oriented the blank as close as I could to being flat, so that I could make just a few cuts to get past the bark, then never touch it again during the hollowing process. The tricky part was not touching the bark with the mcnaughton knives once I got into the cut a ways. If I didn't mention already, the finish is Minwax Antique Oil finish, my personal favorite.

Man Nathan, I'm gonna have to rethink NE bowls. That is two in a row that are just fantastic. Like David D. said, there is typically something about them that doesn't resonate with me aesthetically, but that is nice, and the bark, with its deep furrows really adds some great character.

Nice!

Nathan,
I really like all the natural edge bowls in your last three post, but this one is spectacular.
