Opinions on Dewalt 733 ?????

Anyone here own a Dewalt 733 planer?

Tell me what's good and bad about them and if $275 is a reasonable price for a used one in very good condition.

you can buy a brand new one for $349 and the new one has3 knives instead of 2

as for the quality of the planer for a lunchbox planer its a pretty good machine have had 1 for several years and run a whole lot of wood through it . it cuts very well the only real drawback is that its a lunchbox planer and doesn't really like being used like a production planer which i tend to do at times still for the price its a good machine for what its designed for.

$275 for a used one seems a bit high IMO

I've owned the Dewalt 733 planer for a number of years and have been very happy with it. The blades are easy to change and they can be sharpened. If you use it correctly, there is no or minimal snipe. I also have a NIB 735 that I have not used because I am so happy with the 733. When the 733 breaks down, I will then use the 735.

Since the 733 has been replaced with both the 734 and 735, I personally would not pay more than $200 - $225 for a used 733.

I have owned one for several years. When it was new it worked better than after it had planed a few hundred feet of poplar, walnut, cherry, and oak. I think we have it sold and we replaced it with a larger Grizzley 15" planer/moulder.

Thanks for the replies. The seller started out at $350 and I've watched it fall to $275. I think I'll just keep watching.:)

Half of new purchase price is a good price point for used tools. That would be around $175 for the DW733. BTW, that's a 2-blade planer. The 734 is a 3-blade.

I have a 733 but now use a Grizzly 15". The 733 worked well for a lunchbox planer and I would buy it again if I needed a planer and was on a budget.

Had one for somewhere between 15-20 years with no issues and sold it a year ago for $125 (IIRC) when I got my Hammer J/P. $25 sounds pretty steep to me. Save your pennies and get a 734 if you can swing it.

Just for clarity, the DW733 has 2 knives. The DW734 has 3 knives as does the DW735. I test drove a DW733 courtesy of a friend and went wit the 734 for the 3 knife finish. I still have it and a 15" spiral head floor unit as well. I just can't bring myself to let go of the 734 quite yet ;-)

If in real good shape, $200 would be an OK price I would think if you don't want to save awhile for the 734.
