I was going for an ogee shape and I left a bit of a foot to give the piece a bit of a lift.

I got this piece of wood last winter. I rough turned it in the spring and yesterday I turned it to finished, oil sanded to 600 and waxed.
The wood was so dry that I had a little tear out on the bottom and it was getting too thin for use, so I left it.
It is 15 inches in diameter by 2 5/8 inches high.

That is some beautiful wood and workmanship. I love the shape and finish. I rarely use oil on boxelder but this came out really nice, what type of oil was it?

oil sanded to 600 and waxed

George,

Very nice platter!

Can you describe the "oil sanded to 600" process and what wax you used?

Will this process be safe for food?

Thanks,
Mike

I used mineral oil on this one. I'm not one who worries about how white my boxelder is...
I power sand everything because it is so much faster and so much more thorough (IMO)... I started using oil on this one at 320 grit. I put mineral oil on a cloth and rub it into the piece while spinning on the lathe, then I change direction and rub it in some more... Then I start sanding, at high speed on the lathe (in reverse) and switch direction with the drill. This loosens up the stuff that is stuck in the sandpaper, till I'm sure I have the bigger scratches out.
I progress through 400 and 600. It doesn't take much time.
Then I burnish in the wax from a little block and rub it back off (in both directions) getting the wax hot enough to melt and move.

I hope that clarifies, glad to answer any more questions.

Well done George. I agree that the foot lifts the piece and compliments the ogee form.

George,
Who doesn't like red flame? That is a very nice platter. Very thin and well shaped. Good work.

George, That has got to be the best figure I have seen in good old box elder! The platter's shape is great and it shows the waves of figure wonderfuly!

Great job,

Jeff

Very nice, George. It is hard to find a tree large enough for a platter that large where I live, except for oak. One day though..... :)

Thank you to everyone!
I like box elder, especially burl, which I don't get enough of. But curly stuff like this is also highly prized by me!

Thanks to all again
