Greetings Fellow Turners:

We're headed to Leland MI next week to visit friends from college (that's 44 years ago!) and I turned a little hostess gift from a Honey Locust log.

The finished piece is 13.5 inches across and 3.5 inches high.

The dark spot on the outside edge is the bark. I thought the finger nail sized pieces added interest to the smooth wood.

The log had green leaves on it in April when I got it so I turned it rough and had it in a bag of shavings for 75 days or so. I've got a 1/16 inch of warp at the rim but it seems to be stable now.

The undercut rim was the first I've done and had a few thrilling moments. Fortunately the piece stayed together and I fixed the catches.

My wife made a black flannel presentation bag for the piece and we'll be giving it to our friends of long standing (sounds better than "old friends" don't you think) next week on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Happy Turning, Tom

"Little Hostess gift" Ha, a bit more than "little" in the size sense, and a very nice gift indeed Tom.
Very interesting grains and colors in the wood, and a nice finish as well, thanks for showing and hope you have a good time visiting :D

Beautiful wood, wonderful shape, very nice and I like the contrast of the bark; I hope one day I can do as well. All my friends are longstanding, and OLD .

Show us more!

Thanks for the comments. I've got the other half of the locust trunk in the queue and am waiting for the muse to tell me what to do with it.

Best regards, Tom

I like the lip treatment, the round-over into a sharp crease than angles into the bowl, looks great and adds a nice touch.

I really like it.

I do have one question. I've only turned small things out of honeylocust. Did this one turn like concrete?

Scott, actually it was pretty green when I turned it so not a problem. Long curlies most of the time. I understand if it is dry then the "toughness" factor goes up exponentially.

Best regards, Tom
