I've always been a big fan of these "Rotabins," but they're crazy expensive (upwards of $1000 or more).

Anybody here seen a cheaper version someplace? I'd be OK with plastic if they were heavy-duty enough.

Harbor Freight carries a cheap version of that.

If Harbor Freight do not have them at the time ,why not buy the bearings and upright pipe stand and build your own out of plywood

I bought the Harbor Freight jobs. Took 'em back. Too wobbly and lite duty for me.

I bought a really nice industrial unit at a yard sale for $30 a couple of years ago. Great for keeping nuts and bolts sorted. My FIL gave me a bigger dia unit that I haven't picked up yet. I also have a small one from HF on my electronics bench. OK for small stuff but not heavy enough for much else.

Yeah, I bought one at Harbor Freight a couple of years ago. Too small and flimsy for my needs.

Anybody here seen a cheaper version someplace?Could you build one with 1"+ pipe, some decent bearings and 3/4" marine ply (maybe 1/2" for compartment separation)? The only trick would be finding a sturdy mount for the pipe into your base.

an idea for the base is to use a [ excuse me but I forgot the part name ]the pipe company sell a round plate with a series of smaller holes for screws and a center with threads for the pipe to screw into

I think you mean a flange

pipe flange sound okay to me but to tell the truth, I could not think my way out of a wet paper bag

McFeely's sells one. Haven't seen it in person, so I don't know if it's big enough for you.

Try MSC - http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/GSDRVSM?PACACHE=000000152498537 Prices are all over the place depending on size.

If your company buys from them you can get that discount and put it on your credit card.

With mom and pop hardware stores going out of business almost as fast as mom and pop bookstores, there has to be someplace like Ex-Factory that sells used stuff like Rotabins (and paint shakers, and key cutters, etc.)
