View Full Version : Richmond, VA Red Oak Source?

I'm at the beginning of a project and looking for about 300-400 board feet of 4/4 red oak that is S3S. Called around to the couple of places I usually frequent, but the cheapest I can find is $4.30/board foot for FAS grade.

I can work with either FAS or select grade. Anyone know of places in the Richmond area that have a good red oak supply?

Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I've tried woodfinder before. Unfortunately it is really limited in its listing of Richmond area lumber sources. It only lists two within the city area, one of which is Woodcraft. It doesn't list Siewers or Transit lumber, two places I've used in the past and that I contacted already looking for a reasonable price.

Bill,

It's about (4) hours from Richmond but Groff and Groff Lumber in Pa. is a great source. Good Pricing. Quality Wood I've bought S3S Red Oak from them before. Good website if you want to check them out.

No problem. I just learned of it myself a week or so ago. Found some new places to check out in my area, hoped it would work for you too!

I'm kinda shocked that there isn't more in your area. Have you tried the Williamsburg area? Bit of a drive, but might be worth it, I don't know, but there HAS to be sources near Williamsburg!

Check with Dave in Northern VA. He may have it and will surely know where that you can get it. He customs saws and has a kiln. Here is a link to his website for contact info.

Call Kerry Shackleford at Museum Rescources, his specialty lumber mill in Providence Forge,Va. his cell # is 757-650-7277. Tell him I referred you. Google him. He has all kinds of lumber, and prices I have paid have been reasonable. He also custom cuts wood for museums building early type buildings.

If you can't find anything close to home, you might consider Niagara Lumber. I plugged in a zip for Richmond and got a price of $4.00/bf. All their lumber is select or better and the price includes shipping to your door.

I use them quite often and have always been pleased.

click on the order tab and enter your zip to see their choices and pricing.

When I used to live in Charlottesville, I'd go to Northland Forest Products in Troy, VA. It's probably 30-45 minutes from Richmond.

You might try O'Dell's. Don't know about pricing, though.

Have you thought about buying some red or white oak and drying it yourself? I buy 4/4 quarter oak fencing 16' boards and cut them down to 8'. Then stack them in the barn for a year with the ends painted. Try the lunber yard in Ashland. There are usually two sources advertised in the Richmond Times Dispatch. Dry them on stickers or on rafters with latex paint on the ends and try to keep them out of sun light while drying. They emit a lot of H2O so DO NOT TRY TO DRY THEM INSIDE YOUR HOUSE OR YOUR SHOP!

If you can't find something closer, send my an email. I am a fellow woodworker and sales manager of a hardwood sawmill 120 miles from you in the Shenandoah Valley (near Lexington). hdwoodhill@gmail.com

I'll second Matt's suggestion. I haven't bought from them (yet). I stopped in and took a look around once and they have a lot of selection, good prices (much better than Richmond suppliers in most cases) and were pleasant and helpful.

Give them a call. They are this side of Charlottesville, just off of I-64.

I don't like Yukon,if the same husband and wife are still running it. She is very arrogant, and tried to convince me that the"Brazilian Rosewood" they were selling was real. It wasn't. Some other species entirely. I've used it since the 50's on guitars.

She is a lot more concerned with pushing her agenda than customer service.
