Has anyone here ever us the Blue ceramic flattening stone? I am not a fan of using sandpaper. I 'm wondering how flat these are.

The ceramic flattening stone works well, but it can go out of true. The recommended method for flattening it: Use sandpaper. Personally, I own one and use it. It wastes less sandpaper.

Steve,

It's from Bob Kramer website.

He didn't list the company name.

FWIW, I use a coarse DMT stone to flatten.

I use a similar stone that came from Norton (I think). I believe that it is very close to flat because I've used it on multiple stones and then used the stones on each other. When I've done this, there is lots of stiction which leads me to believe the surfaces are very uniform with each other, and therefore flat.

I wanted to use a course DMT but was told by a retailer that it will abrade the diamonds in a fairly short amount of time even though DMT boasts this use. I can't say one way or another, but waterstones are meant to abrade even Rockwell 64 hardness so it makes a little sense to me.

With that bit of information, I decided to stick with my standby of using 220 grit drywall sanding screen laid on a 12" square tile from a home center. It gets them flat in a hurry and you can use the screen a couple of times before tossing it. I think 5 screens cost about $2.49 at HF so it costs me quarter to flatten the stones each time.

Same as Don's method w/ drywall screen. I have the Norton's flattening stone but it needs to be flattened frequently. So I don't use it any more.
