I made a brief departure from penturning last night to try a sable cosmetic brush. It was fun and I think I will add more fine details like beads on the next one. The wood is a nice piece of box elder burl with a CA finish.

Joe,
Useful and lovely piece..........that burl is very nice! That form is not too far from some shaving brushes I have seen, only I think yours is a bit smaller for the ladies to put on makeup.
where do you get the brush heads?

Thanks, Roger. I agree, it did come out looking like a shaving brush, but it is a bit smaller.
You can find sable brush heads online from The Golden Nib or Arizona Silhouette.

does anyone also turn a cup for the shave soap?

I think Paul Douglass is only one I've seen turn a cup...though out of soapstone. That being said, I would think any wood could be used, depending on finish used. A good poly or even oil finish may hold up to soap use pretty well, I'd think. An alternative, is to finish with a thin coat of epoxy on inside.

I know very little about make-up, but I know a beautiful piece of wood when I see it. Nice job with the turning too.
