This is my third completed turning from maple burl. The piece is 5" across the top and 3 3/4" high at the tallest point. Several dyes were used to create the variation of color. Top coat is sprayed WB lacquer.

Thanks for looking and comments and critiques are encouraged.

William very nice piece I like the color. I'm not able to critique as I have not done any quite like this. I was wondering though if you did any buffing before applying the top coat. I find that buffing can make a huge difference in the end result. Great job, keep up the good work!:)

I really like it. I wonder what it would look like set up on a pedestal?:confused:

William, you KNOW I am going to like this piece!! Maple burl and dyes - a perfect match! Very nice work, and I like the color. What dyes did you end up using?

Thanks all for your responses. I was pleased with this particular piece for two reasons. One- I actually planned the shape and executed the form; without the accidental 'design' changes. Two, the blending of dyes in the finish.

Jon, I've exploded several pedestals/finials and gonna have to develop a better technique before attempting others with the 'good' wood. If you know a reasonable source of Blackwood, please share.

JK, the piece was hard to photograph (with my lighting) to get a real sense of the color. Here are two daylight pics that are closer to the actual appearance, but doesn't capture the dance of colors with the chatoyancy of the burl--

The goal was to have a slightly darker outside and a layered fire look inside, with the spiked edge tips flickering yellow. The finish on the inside were transtints yellow and dark oak dye then an oil/varnish blend applied. A seal coat was applied. Then a yellow/honey amber dye mix, rosewood and finally a General Finishes merlot in the middle. The spike edge was dye painted with an artist brush in layers of yellows and reds. The outside was dyed in a similar manner without the merlot and a cinnamon use instead and applied uniformly. The sprayed top coat is a gloss Target WB lacquer, 1500g leveled and buffed waxed.

All this sounds like alot of work, but with a small piece it was just a few drops of dye in DNA mixed in small disposable cups; dry time was very quick. I did all the coloring in two days, with the oil taking the longest to dry.

Thanks Leo and Steve, appreciate your comments. Leo, I saw a litter of puppies.

A great bowl. Natural edge burl bowls are my absolute favorite - but you really have to watch out for those spikes.

You guys and your dye!:eek::eek::eek:;)

I'm really starting like some these combinations of colors. This one is a beauty. If you don't knock it of you're gonna have me trying it.
