I didn't realize that there was anything wrong with this maple until it was to late and I cut the end grain. Any ideas on what happened and is there any solution?

It appears to be throughout the whole board of maple you used...could be a stain/spalt of some kind but not the kind we like unfortunately. Unless you dye the board, I'm not sure you can hide it or sand it out or anything.

Is the maple glued down?

It could be glue that bleed through.

Looks like blue sticker stain to me. Maple is very prone to that. So is ash. Doubtful you can remove it, but you can first try household chlorine bleach to lighten it. If the Clorox doesn't work, try "wood bleach" (oxalic acid) to lighten the stain. Best of Luck!

I might try the bleach on a test piece I had and see how that goes. It is kind of disappointing because I really had no way of knowing that the piece of wood was going to do that until it was already glued up and cut.
