This is my first "art" piece that I have turned in some time, it is spalted maple with bloodwood accents. The maple was beyond dry and very punky, but after some time with the skew I managed to smooth the outside enough to cut out alot of sanding. Measures 6" wide and 9" to the top of the finial. Finished with wipe on poly. comments and critiques are welcomed.

Very unique piece of wood. Nice form. Looks as if you had your hands full with the punky wood, and having it hold together was most likely a chore!

thanks for sharing!

Ryan, that wood is very nice - probably didn't look like it was going to be this nice while turning, but it was certainly worth the effort. Love the wormholes! Nice piece, and well done.

That's cool. I love the spherical form, and that spalting is unbelievable.

ooh, ryan - i like that; i like that alot. you did a great job turning the spalted wood, which i know can be either very hard or too soft. nice finial, too.

A beautiful piece. It also shows what those who "don't have time to turn bad wood" are missing. :D

Great looking piece Ryan. The finial has a great shape and is well proportioned but I'm not crazy about the color of it's longest section. I think I would have had it in the darker wood, maybe where the bloodwood ball starts and continue to the top with bloodwood. Just my opinion but otherwise it is most excellent.
