This piece is 14" x 8" from a beautiful piece of Chechen Burl. See album for more photos. John Keeton could you please add a few selected photos to this thread. I gave up trying. Anyway I often can not sacrifice very nice wood into shavings to create symmentry. Such was the situation with this piece. I could turn a dish or a 6" hollow form, nay, I would absolutely maximize this burl , including bark spaces. So this piece literally emerged without a great deal of thought, just follow the wood I was thinking and this piece just happened. Then I could not decide which was "top or bottom" I liked both presentations. I like sculpting wood on the lathe which often presents challenges in turning a good amount of "air" and holding the piece to a finish without an obvious foot. The piece was finished in my traditional method of vinyl sealer and ten or so coats of musical instrument lacquer. Final leveling with 10,000 wet and Renaissance wax.

That's really cool, David. I like the presentation both ways, so if it were in my house, I'd probably alternate between the two positions.

That's beautiful burl, and the finish is fantastic as well.

Beautiful job Dave. I agree with Dave:D, I'm not sure which way I would display it. Maybe one way on odd days and the other on even.

I think I'd display that with a sign that reads "pick me up, turn me over, spin me around".

btw, you have some beautiful work in your gallery.
