Howdy everyone,

Well the mail lady brought me this today....

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/42.jpg">

It's a #4 type 19. A friend (Robin Frierson aka frigator) from...another forum..as they say...does an excellent job of feddeling these planes as a hobby. This one has 99% japanning, totes are near perfect and is in all around excellent condition. Robin put the super tune on it for me including the LN A2 blade. I'm tickled to get this one as my first....not last.....vintage Stanley. :D :D :D

Thanks for looking,

Terry

edit: can't spell.

Tom,

The plane was $70 plus $10 shipping with the Stanley blade. I opted to put the LN A2 .125 blade in it and that was an extra $35. $115 total. Robin had other #4's for as little as $50, but this one was near mint. I could not pass on it. Let me tell you that Robin can surely tune a plane. The sole lapping etc... is unbelieveable and the blade is down right dangerous sharp. :eek: I just thought that I got my Record #5 blade sharp!! I have a long way to go before I can tune one like this one is tuned. I got .001 shavings right out of the box.

The other pic really does not do justice to the condition of this plane. Here are a couple more just for grins. :D

Hey Terry,

Did you figure out the storage situation yet? Been anxious to here what you have come up with.

Congrats on the new plane!

John,

I decided to make a removeable (so I can easily add on later) tray for the bottom drawer in the bench. I cut a piece of hardboard the same size as the drawer so I could work on layout and me to help figure out what tools I want to be in the drawer with the planes. I'll make some dividers/holders for the various tools from hardwood and use some 3/4" ply for the base of the tray. I would imagine that I'll tilt the tray towards the front of the drawer to make for easy viewing/access to the goodies.

Here's the latest configuration......

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/plstor.jpg">

The 2 pieces of melamine are cut the same size as the footprints of the LV LA block and the LV LA jack that I don't have here yet.

The more I thought about it the more sense it made to build an insert for the drawer to hold the tools rather than having a cabinet on the wall. I simply ain't got any wall space left!!!

Thanks,

t

t,

Don't you especially like the melamine planes??? They are not as useful as the real planes but are much cheaper, lighter and hardly ever need sharpening.

Actually, the collection grew by one tonite. I got a Stanley #5 from Robin to go with my #4. Can't stand to not have a matched set you know. It'll be a couple weeks before he can get to feddeling it. As usual, I'll be sure to post the pic when I get it. Looks like I might ebay the Record #5..or perhaps not. I suppose there is no such thing as to many. :D

Melamine plane? I'd have to say that is a first. ;)
You better cut some more place holders and find another drawer cause this is a bad Jones. I got it bad and it's getting worse. I'm having a lot of fun in the shop and my X said that wasn't allowed:o

Seemed like a good idea to me. :D I can just browse the catalogs, cut up melamine the same size as the planes I want, arrange the divders accordingly and make sure Cheryl knows that there are empty holes awaiting occupants. :D :D :D

Terry,

What a GREAT IDEA! I like it and I think it will work out great for you. That is until you get more than you can fit in that drawer. And at the pace you are going down the slope that might be before the drawer insert is completed :)

Looking good!
John

There's not much chance that the room you've alloted for the hand tools in that drawer will last much more than a couple of months at best. Start right now planning to find some wall space whether you think you have it or not. I've attached a photo to show you just how bad this problem can get. Note that the till is full. I also have a set of 16 hollows and rounds still in a toolbox, a plow plane on a separate display stand, some 6 planes hidden under the lid, a #3 and a 24" try plane and a 28" jointer hung on another wall. It only gets worse, so be prepared.:D
