Here are a couple of birch bowls I turned.
I split a piece out of the neighbors wood pile,it sat about a year and spalted nicely.
I turned them twice with about 2 mo. in between.
On one I used BLO and two coates of salad bowl finish sanding between coats.
On the other I used a mixture of mineral oil and bees wax.
I hope you like them.

Nicely done, Jeff. What are the dimensions? I'm guessing the mineral oil/wax is the less shiny of the two.

You lose just a few style points for the tail center mark in the bottom on that one bowl, but otherwise they look great.

I am envious of you guys up north having access to all that birch - makes such a beautiful bowl. Great job on these.

Very nice job on both bowls Jeff! I've managed to turn a bunch of white birch and love it!

Looking forward to seeing your next turning!

Thank you folks for the kind words.
I still consider myself a beginner.
The bowls are 8 1/2 x 2 1/2 in.
Yes John paper birch grows like weeds around here and can turn punky easely.

Very nice bowls, really like the BLO/salad bowl finish, really enhances the color & grain.

Nice user bowls Jeff, I like the shiny one better, but both do look good, well done :-))

Yes you sure are right about the Birch going soft in a hurry, but if you time it just right you can get some awesome spalted wood that is not too soft and punky to turn.
