View Full Version : Identifying Wood

Is there a good resource for identifying wood logs or trees? When searching for wood, whether it be an unfelled tree or one that is already cut up, I still find it difficult to determine what type of tree I'm looking at. For example, photos, bark description, color, etc. would all be helpful to distinguish one tree from another. I picked up some black walnut a week ago that I didn't even realize was black walnut until I rough cut it on the bandsaw. To be honest, I thought it was post oak. At the same time, I saw an ad today on CL where it was claimed to be oak but it looked like possibly pecan. Of course, if I'm purchasing wood in log form, I'd like to be able to recognize the particular wood the seller claims it is. Thanks in advance!

Brett,
Post a good picture on SMC and I am sure someone will help you out. I just had the same problem and someone who turned out to be an arborist/turner was kind enough to set me straight.

My apologies Brett the link I provided was for already sawed/planed wood with grain etc. exposed. But of course you probably already know that by now.
