View Full Version : A new piece

Since I got the new lathe, I've spent a fair amount of time roughing out bowls (as well as cutting trees). However, I had to get the finish on this piece - which was the last piece on the Delta before I got the Jet - as the intended recipient's birthday is tomorrow. It's a beautiful piece of claro walnut from Mike Smith, 8 1/4" by 2 3/4".

My photography does not do the wood justice.

Comments and criticism welcome.

Cathy, what a great bowl!! Looks perfect on the granite countertop, too. Don't you just love the Claro walnut? Great to turn, and seems every piece is strikingly beautiful.

You didn't get the last piece, did you?!?!?!

Really nice bowl. Love the rim. Mike is sending some of that Claro my way soon. I hope it's as nice as that...

What a wonderful job you did on that Cathy! The form, the finish...a couple of embellishments, but not too much. Pretty dang pretty.

Oh...yeah...and I guess the wood looks ok too.;):)

great details on the outside. love the bottom, and the rim treatment. Great finish and the form is a classic! Your recipient will most likely go ga ga over this one.

Really nice Cathy! Congrats!

How did you know it is my birthday tomorrow?:D

That is a flat out beautiful bowl. The wood is beautiful and you did right by it. I wouldn't change a thing (except the intended recipient:p).

Thank you all, very much. I said to the hubby that it was hard to give this one away!

Cathy,
Nice finish. What finish did you use?
Pete - modeling after Mr. Keeton, I used BLO, shellac, then lacquer. After it cured, I buffed with
Don Pencil's PL compound and RenWax.

No John she didn't get the last piece I did.:rolleyes::cool:;)

Ha - Mike sent me an e-mail saying he's shipped a couple BIG pieces my way - maybe now he's out! That must be why he went back to Oregon.

This hobby is more fun than should be legal!! :D

Nice job. I was glad to see how you did the bottom of the bowl. I have been wanting to leave that part on the bowl and just incorporate it into the looks and it appears you did a wonderful job of that.

I do not have a cole jaw set or vac chuck at this point so getting the bottoms done right is really getting on my nerves...
