I'm trying to find time to get back into the swing of things (pun intended) and found this little walnut vase I had roughed out a few years ago and left on the shelf. I managed to get it finished up and I had forgotten how pretty a piece of wood this is. It ended up about 5-1/2" wide and about 6-1/2" tall. I used a couple of coats of antique oil rubbed in and then buffed. The finish is glossy and really pops the grain/figure in this chunk of wood.

All comments, critiques, suggestions, and/or opinions are welcomed.

Mark - you're still the walnut King! Beautiful vase! Great looking wood and finish but the form really stands out as exceptional!

Very nice work! Glad you found this piece and finished it! Thanks for sharing!

Nice Mark, I really like the shape and the finish. Walnut does have some great grain patterns.

Nice job on the vase. There are many woods in the world, but American black walnut never ceases to amaze me.

Mark,

Whenever a new turner needs examples of good form whether its an NE or in this case a vase, you, Keith Burns and Travis Stinson are 3 of the first turners pieces I recommend.

Great form...I love the gentle curve through the neck into the mouth of the vase.....great finish and gorgeous wood.

Nicely done! Thanks for posting.

Can't say anymore than has already been said Mark. Just beautiful. The mouth on this piece is definitely on my to-do list.;)

Nice! Graceful. Clean. Simple. Fine piece of wood. This is the kind of piece that makes one foolishly think "turning must be easy". But the hardest thing (IMMHO) is to create a simple form that can "stand alone" without any embellishments. This one can...

Thanks for the comments. Pieces of wood like this are one of the main things that keeps me coming back for more at the lathe. I don't think it would matter what shape or form was turned with this piece, the God-placed beauty of the wood would stand head and shoulders above it as it does here.

There simply isn't anything else I can add for commenting. No matter what one's taste or preference is in form, this just "has" to be beautiful to everyone.
