This is the last of the sequence of 5 vases that I had roughed out from the wonderful curly maple that Rich Aldrich had given me. Beautiful stuff! Thanks Rich!

This vase was dyed to match vase #4 as I thought a set might look pretty cool.

Curly Maple vase, 8 3/4" high x 4" diameter x 3/16" thick. Dyed using RIT powdered clothing dye mixed with DNA (denatured alcohol). Has several coats of Minwax gloss wipe-on poly and will get buffed after the finish has cured for at least a week.

As always, your comments, opinions and critiques are welcomed!

Thanks for looking!

You and John surely set the bar high for the rest of us. Keep on turning, we love looking.
I don't know how far I am from you. I just hope to meet up some day.

Steve, the color match worked out great!! Really nice form on all of these, and they are so homogenous. Obviously, a theme was carried through all of them, and that is the neat part with them being roughed at the same time.

This is going to make a great "series" of works, and a composite pic would be nice. You should do one in PowerPoint like Mark Hubl does and post it in either this thread or a new one.

Steve,

I'm liking the set concept! They are better together than separately in my opinion, because of the color match and the complimentary form.

Of course, your finish technique always stands out. Nice work Steve!

so many wonderful ideas on this forum! Keep it up ladies and gentlemen!

Another nice one, Steve. I agree with JK about a photo of the entire series. Great job on matching the color... You made it look easy.

What's next now that the curly maple series is finished?

Steve,

Beautiful work. I didn't realize this was curly maple when cut it out of a pile of firewood that my brother bought from my dad. These pieces did have a certain look, which is why I grabbed them. I'll have to remember the look.... and keep my brother from burning them!

I just can't get over how well that dye worked. It's not too overpowering, shows the character of the wood, and you even managed to match a set in totally different sessions. Too cool Steve.

And on the forms. I like these alot. They are simple and holdable. Its just something you want to pick up and fondle.

That's a very good looking set Steve and match up amazingly well. I too would love to see all 5 in the series photographed together. Really sad to see the end of that curly maple "firewood". Thanks for posting this series!

Thanks everyone for your kind words - I do appreciate it! Especially knowing that using dye can be upsetting to some!

I do not have a photo tent large enough to hold all 5 vases - so, a snapshot will have to do. :D

Very fine work, I like your use of color to enhance and/or emphasize features of the medium. Thanks for sharing your work, it certainly gives novice turners (i.e. me) something to aspire.

Hubba Hubba,

Now that R Purdy!!! Steve putting them all in one picture side by side was what I meant by "display." Every piece highlights the one beside it and it makes the eyes dance as every piece begs for you to look at it!

What a wonderful collection.............only thing missing is a purple dye or a blue dye that would scream for attention as well!

Steve, I really like this group.............great turning, form and finish....you should be proud!

Steve, all of the forms are exceptional, but displayed like this (even in a snapshot!) really makes for a great collage of turnings. Very complimentary forms, yet so different. Just an excellent series, and one that really deserves a bigger tent!!;) If you are going to do these series turnings, you might want to consider it! Or, do the PowerPoint collage with separate pics.
