If you hadnt seen it, I am building this tool cabinet ....

It consists of Walnut ( the cabinet itself ) and the drawers are maple sides and backs, with fronts using Padauk, Purple heart, and Zebra wood....

I want a finish that is not super shiny, and won't tint the wood in any way if at all possible. And I will most likely need to be able to wax the drawer sides from time to time...

Is there a simple solution here...? or will I need to use two or three products to get the finish I need ?

thanks.

BLO, BLO use some BLO (<--- to the tune of Jingle Bells). . . IMHO. I shellac drawer fronts too as they tend to collect grime eventually from all the opening and closing; at least around where the finger rub. Both the shellac and BLO are easily refreshed if things get banged up.

So just BLO no varnish or any other stuff ? Huh.... that almost sounds too easy. I have been reading about all these products on the various online stores... It is mind blowing. BLO + me = happy camper.

A couple of light coats of shellac on the drawer fronts after the BLO will protect them from stains and dirt.

I would use Daly's ProFin. Wipe on, wipe off. Has excellent protection for a wipe on, better than straight BLO.

If you want the woods to keep as close as possible to their current colors, do not use an oil or oil based finish. Oil based finishes will impart quite a bit of amber color which may not look good on the pupleheart and zebrawood. Shellac will also impart some amber color.

The first thing I would try would be a waterborne acrylic finish. These finishes go on water clear and do not yellow over time.

Let me strong advise that you apply various finishes to scrap from your project. That's the only way you will see how the finish will affect the color of the wood.
