Griz G0513X2 BS Lower Blade Guide Question

I recently purchased the subject BS. Currently working through setup adjustments. Last night I went to put a 3/4" blade on it and it was a little difficult because for some reason the lower blade guide has metal side shields on it. I'm thinking of removing them unless someone knows of a good reason to have them.

(I know the blade is way to one side of the thrust bearing - I fixed it, some how they put an extra washer behind the left side blade shield)
