I'm looking for roundover router bit or shaper cutter that will cut a half ellipse instead of a circular radius to give the edge an elliptical rather than a rounded profile. I haven't had any luck. I'm planning on cutting 4/4 or 5/4 stock.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Which half-ellipse do you want -- the pointy end or the flatty one?

If you want the pointy end, several profiles on this page -- http://www.eagleamerica.com/product/v174-2002/ea_-_table_edge -- will do the job. They take two passes.

If you want the flat half-ellipse, you can fake it pretty easily. Pick a regular roundover bit that's larger than half the board's thickness. Make two passes -- top and bottom. Now use a sander to blend the profiles, and voila.

The pointy part. The bits you linked to are exactly what I am looking for, thanks. I just didn't know what to call it- "table edge". The stair handrail shaper cutters also have the profile I'm looking for but are too big. These should work fine.
