French Polish is a specific technique using shellac, pumice, mineral oil, and a linen (filled with wool) pad... It is not really an application method for shellac.

You are most likely thinking about padding shellac which many people confuse with French Polish.

Scott,

Thanks very much for that link!

I am working on a cherry pedestal table. I had applied one coat of dewaxed shellac to the top and I tried using the same methods I've used successfully with polyureathane and it didn't work.

I had areas with excessive buidup and resultant lines in the finish. I scratched my head, and thought about it. Then I took denatured alcohol and some rags and removed the shellac wondering if it could have just redistributed it. This article answered that question.

I will be going at it again!

Thanks!
