First time I've turned magnolia and I must say I like it. The pedestal and finial are blackwood. The form was hollowed thru a 1/2" opening. Finished with antique oil and buffed. Measures 3-3/4" dia. x 9-1/4" tall. Comments/critiques are welcome.

That's very nice. I like the simple style of the finials(not simple to make... 'unadorned' may be a better term). Your posted turnings are an inspiration to me, and this piece is not an exception.

I would be hard pressed to tell spalted magnolia from spalted maple and a few others. Regardless, I love the look of spalted wood.

Awesome piece Kieth, everything just flows together here. Kinda reminds me of one of those pictures of water drops in a puddle. Very neat.

I bet you get tired of being on the cover of WoW.

You should stop giving them your pictures.;)

Ok ok...I like it very much. Been looking at it all day and I love its balance most of all. Secondly, I'm in love with its simplicity. Its a really great...I mean, terrific piece. :)

Great looking HF. The clean lines along with the combination of black finial/pedestal and black zone lines in the spalting make a standout piece!

Keith,

That certainly is a beauty! The woods are great...I especially like the simplistic forms of the pedestal and finial. They give an elegant feel to the piece IMHO.

Nicely done!

Question? Where are you and Keeton getting your blackwood?

Ken, basically I shop for it when out and about. Sometimes I get lucky and find it on sale. The last I got from Choice Woods in Louisville, KY.

Ken, David Keller and I just bought a bunch of it from Gilmerwood. I ended up getting 34 lbs of 1.5" square stock in pieces from 7" - 17" long. Thirty pieces, total cost including shipping was $152, so about $5/piece. Most of it was nice. A few had some sapwood on corners, but all of it should turn off.

I have also purchased from Choice Woods at Keith's suggestion. Ended up with a couple dozen pen blanks from there at a very good price. They are just the right size for finials.

Keith,
As always this is a great looking piece. The Magnolia is stunning with both a pedestal and finial combination. Very well done.
