View Full Version : How Far From Steve Schlumpf?...

Wally Dickerman

What is it with everybody telling us how far they live from Steve? Steve seems like a very nice guy but folks seem to want to live a long way from him.:D In Arizona I must be at least 1500 miles from Steve.

I was kind of thinking the same thing Wally.

That being said I have figured out I am 1480 miles from Steve S....

Guilt by association? :D I think it must be because he is a moderator and a mentor to so many, so when folks post, they must get braggin' rights:D;):)

I think it must be part of the recovery process from the vortex: Step one - admit your addiction...
Step 2- admit your association with all these nafarious creekers :D:D:D

Step 3 - when you think about it, who would want to give up this addiction anyway, so just forget about steps one and two :D:eek::D

I've been wondering that for quite some time. As far as I can tell, Steve is 958.45 miles away from me.

Egocentric? no ....:D

It started when his neighbor, Bob, said he lived next door to Steve. I then said I lived a few hours south of Steve and many people have joined in since. He is the nicest guy in Michigan!

John Keeton

I haven't checked my mileage to Steve, but save for the weather there, and the grandkids here, I would love to live closer. He has been mentor supreme for me from day one of my dive into the world of turning. Steve has been more than helpful, and is my official "design committee" - always willing to look at a pic and give me an opinion.

Super guy, great woodturner, and Steve personifies the "spirit of the creek!"

Maybe that is the reason?!?!?

Jon Lanier

This is fun. Kinda like the 7 degree's of Kevin Bacon.

1050 miles according to Google Earth for me. OR 18 hours and 5 minutes.

Derek Voigt
08-01-2010, 8:20 PM
Yea I was wondering that too... it looks like I'm pretty close to him... but then I didn't want it to seem like I was trying to brag, because it isn't like I really know him!

Mike Cross

Just checked the distance and he is 1422 miles from me.

1123 miles for me

It just shows how spread out we are! Maybe as moderator (I think he may have been the only one active when I joined) we figured he is the center of the SMC turning forum....

I'm glad somebody asked... I've often wondered.

1123 miles for me

+1

1694 or 1733 miles depending on which route, google recommends the longer one as being faster so that is the one that I will go with.

I figured I may as well play along so according to Mapquest I am 5 hours 2 minutes / 280.51 miles.

From the looks of things I'm dang near a neighbor :p Maybe the wife and I will have to do another creeker visit sometime. :D

Doesn't really matter how far you live from Steve, he's like a next door neighbor. Probably as decent and helpful a guy as you could ever wish for in a neighbor too.

Apparently Google Maps thinks I'm approximately 19 hours 34 mins, or about 1,155 miles south of Steve...

That's a "fur piece" as they say here...

Shall I drop in for a couple minutes? ;)

I live about 60 miles from Steve. It's a long way.:D

He is very helpful. He helped me get starting turning. I am really getting dizzy, though. It pulled enough money out of my wallet, that my wife is getting a little upset.

Karl Card
08-01-2010, 11:01 PM
Well I am 673 miles from Steve... Just a little south...

I will add that just from what I know from Steve it appears that he has a super personality and I feel very strongly that he would help with any turning project problem you may have.

not to take away from Steve but I would also like to say that geeeeeeee
I only live about 3 hours from the infamous John "kenny rodgers" Keeton..
I would say he was an up and rising star but from the looks of his works I think he is already there....

Michael James

Wally, when I came on this forum, I saw that mileage written in some of the poster's signatures, and finally, I said, "Why not?", and figured the mileage.
It's fun, just to see all of it, now... :)
And everyone is correct... there's never been a nicer person in this forum, than Steve. (present company excepted, of course)....:p;)

WOW! You folks are funny and have WAY to much time on your hands! Slow shop day? Waiting for finish to dry?

To be honest, I have wondered about some of this for a while now also. Other than John Hart living in my basement and Bob Hainstock living next door - everyone else sure lives a long ways away!

Got me to thinking - were folks stating how close they lived or how far away? Hummm, I'm fairly quiet, wear deodorant and really like everything about turning - especially the sharing aspect! Must be something else!

Seriously - I appreciate the running gag line! Just goes to show how close everyone is here on the Creek! I figure we're all friends - just have met yet!

Appreciate the laughs!!! Have fun turning today! :D

Steve,
Apparently it doesn't take much to entertain a woodturner. Think about it we spent lots of money time just to watch something go round and round!:D:D:D

OK… here's the "stats"

I live 2188.9 miles from Steve Schlumpf.

I am 5 years, 4 months and 9 days older than Steve Schlumpf.

Steve Schlumpf has made 7997 more posts on this forum than I have.

Steve Schlumpf has been a contributor to this forum for 8 months and one day longer than I have.

Steve Schlumpf has probably produced a thousand more turnings than I have.

Steve Schlumpf has a much nicer looking avatar.

But…

My wife still wants to know… Who the hell is Steve Schlumpf ?

Ken Fitzgerald

David,

Tell her he and his wife live in the apartment above John Hart's apartment.

Hmm... I live approximately 900mi from Steve Schlumpf as the crow flies. But, as the lift capacity of a crow is minimal at best I feel driving distance (1200mi) would be a more practical expression of my distance from Steve.

I was going to walk to Steve's, but I found that, while I'm in SC, it is 1169.64 miles. Of course, I'm headed to my place in VA, where it is much closer to his house... a mere 1021.81 which is doable, though at my age (72) it might take more than a day.

Jeff Nicol

Well I live 313 miles southwest of Steve, a good 6 hour drive if I take my time. But if I drive like a nascar nut the possibilities are endless! There are a few variables that can change the timing, like how many deer, bear, turkey, possibly an elk or moose may cause fast decelleration at any time. Thus adding to the total time on the road or flying through the air into the ditch! So I must build a large critter catcher for my F250 to keep moving at a steady rate of speed. If built correctly the box will be filled with lots of wild critters for grilling and possibly horn for pen turning! I better get busy as I would like to make the trip sometime this year!

A man of his stature and good nature, are well worth the miles and mishaps to get to Harvey MI.

313 miles from Steve Schlumpf

I have made a very important determination in my ability to transcend both space and time.

I have nearly not enough time to do all that I want to do, and I don't have the space for it if I did.

But, I have determined that I'm 1072 miles from Steve Schlumpf, and that's almost as cool as saving a bundle on car insurance!! :p

Glad we have you Steve, no matter how far away you are.!!

Belinda Barfield
08-03-2010, 10:05 AM
1332.39 miles give or take a few as I don't know Steve's exact location.

For those of you attending IWF, have a T shirt printed with your distance from Steve. We can pick a day to wear the shirts and Steve will become world famous. Actually, he is already world famous for being such a great guy!

Does anyone have the design for the decoder ring that unlocks the basement door?

So much for that bright idea. (sigh)

Ray Bell

According to Map Quest, 1800.61 mi., or 27 Hr. 40 Min. A long time ago though I lived on a little lake in the UP, called Farmers Lake. That was either Negaunee (sp)?, or Ishpeming. I think I would have been Steve's neighbor.

Glenn Clabo
08-03-2010, 4:37 PM
Hoyt...you don't need a passport...you need an overnight pass from your doctor.

Ken Fitzgerald
08-03-2010, 6:48 PM

I thought he needed a pass for the "hall monitor".

Andy Hoyt

John Beaver

Ok, I had to look, and on Google Maps it looks like he lives in Lake Superior. So leaving So Cal I could sail south, through the Panama Canal, up the Atlantic to the Hudson River, through the other Great Lakes and meet him at the dock in about 3 months.

The driving estimate is 1 day 13 hours, but you have to go through Vegas so that could add days....

Sorry Steve, I guess you'll have to remain a virtual friend for the time being.

2330 in case you were wondering.

As we speak, I am determining the distance from Lewisville, NC 27023 to where ever it is Steve lives. Moreover I go to the Ann Arbor street fair and I don't think it is too far North to visit Steve. It would be my great pleasure to see him in person. Wish me luck. I have been to the Street Fair many times and weather is very un-predictable.

David, I hope you're prepared for another days drive from Ann Arbor! When I use to go back up there from North Ga. I would spend the night in Ann Arbor and still not get there until late sometimes:eek:. He's so far north, he can see the Northern Lights! The directions I was first given to get there from Ga. was "take I-75 until it ends, then go east 200 miles until you get there":eek::eek:
However the area is absolutely beautiful. If you go, you'll want to take lots of Lake Mich. and Lake Superior pictures. If you like fishing there are hundreds of lakes in that area. Oh....the Mackinac bridge is the 3rd longest suspension bridge in the world. It's an amazing drive across it! Especially in late December with a salt truck having to convoy you across:o. Also a great day trip is Mackinaw island.......
Oh yes before I forget, Steve Schlumph lives up there also. I wished I had met him when I lived up there, but I to have be contemplating a trip back for old time sakes........in the warmer months, it would be great to meet him in person!;)

I can hear it now . . .

Good evening, and welcome back to WBS Evening News. I'm Rich Hedupmias. And I'm Suzy Fuloplastik.

We'd like to end the news tonight with a special story. Days ago all across this great land people started loading their tents and their tools into vehicles bearing bumper stickers reading "Got Curls?", "I brake for downed trees", and "Victim of the Vortex". They took to the road stopping at diners in small towns, and homes in cities to pick up other like minded folk for an adventure in a place some say you can't get to, but they did.

They arrived in twos and threes, the crowd swelling daily. There was no advertising, just word of mouth and . . . road trip on.

The gathering has come to be known as Schlumpfstock, and no one knows how large the crowd will be before this is over.

And this just in . . . we have confirmation that one John Hart has come out from under the stairs. He saw his shadow and forecast another six weeks of good turning weather.

(No offense intended to any news anchors. I just thought the names made the post more entertaining.)

Here are summaries of the effect of vaporized drugs on the brain...
Inhalants, such as glue, gasoline, hair spray, and thinner, are sniffed on purpose or during work. The effect on the brain is almost immediate. And while some vapors leave the body quickly, others will remain for a long time. The fatty tissues protecting the nerve cells in the brain are destroyed by inhalant vapors. This slows down or even stops neural transmissions. Effects of inhalants include diminished ability to learn, remember, solve problems, and find their way to Steve's house.

John Hart
08-05-2010, 9:32 AM
Well that explains it Glenn. I didn't see lacquer in the list. That's why I made to Steve's basement.

I've been thinking about this and I figure that it really depends on which way you go. If I go east, figuring that Harvey, Michigan is at about 46 degrees north and figuring that the circumference of the Earth at that latitude is approximately 17328 mi, I would be right around 2189 miles from Steve. But if I go east, I would have to travel 15,134 miles to get to Steve's.

But then it occurred to me. The Earth is always turning (humm… does that mean something?) With it rotating counterclockwise at around 1,000 MPH, all I would need to do is figure out how to suspend myself above ground for a bit over two hours and Steve would come to me! Of course I would have to be sure to avoid getting hit by any tall buildings or mountains. If I levitated right now, Steve's house might get here in time for dinner...

Glad to see everyone is having fun with this.... but the bad news is - most of you can't get to here from there. You have to go around!

Just for those of you who don't know where the greater Harvey metro area is located - here are a couple of links to maps.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Harvey&state=MI

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=harvey+mi&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Harvey,+MI&gl=us&ei=XDVaTKz4GMOcnAfWzrDvAg&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CBgQ8gEwAA

Steve, those maps bring back a lot of memories. I was there from 1960-64, stationed at KI Sawyer AFB. Even with the loooong winters I loved it uo there.

Sounds to me like somebody either has turning on the brain (no, not that!), or has been down in John Hart's room under the stairs.... ;)

Ok, late to the party as usual. I am 388 miles south of Mr. S Squared. Now, I have been to Green Bay a couple of times. So on those occasions I was only 181 miles from Steve.

Not in my case... About the same distance from Steve S heading East or West...... :D

But he is welcome to drop by coming either way.

Its no wonder Steve is such a nice guy. The area he lives in is absolutely gorgeous! Had no idea you were so far up there.

I would guess that I am nearly his neighbor, I mean he only lives in the neighbouring state, but then you would have to get through Detroit, and that little thing about the border and with your homeland securite, after that yah have to find your way out of Windsor then up a real boring stretch of rough lonely highway and somewhere just around London yeh got to turn up for a couple of hours. So maybe we aint that close after all and with all the holdups you can hardly get to him from here, but I do hear that he is a nice guy, just tough to get to. Dirk H:cool:
