Last month the demonstrator at our club demonstrated turning platters. He did his from a green blank, but (ofcourse) I had to segment mine. I was surprised at how easy and fast these little buggers go together -- maybe a couple of hours each overall.

The wife gets the credit for the art work.

What ya think?

P.S. I made both boxes and stars designs, but if you look at the star designs from up close they might look like boxes -- blink your eyes a few times and they look like stars. I'm guessing that this has to do with the orientation of the wood grain of the pieces surrounding the star. I'll experiment with the next one.

Don't suppose you could be talked into a tutorial on those stars or boxes could ya?

WOW those look great. Really nice platters, your joints are very clean. Even at 2 hours each, that is quite a bit of work (it would take much longer for me).

Bill,
Wonderful plates. Your joinery is outstanding. Someone has a talented wife. I hope you two haven't spent your lives competing with each other for role of #1 Artist in the house.

Those are really nice looking. I like the one your wife painted with the flowers the best.

Bill, excellent work on these. On the star patterns, I do think the illusion is the result of the surrounding wood species and the grain pattern, but they look great nonetheless! Fantastic joinery - and, the wife did a great job as well.

Jerry, they are as big as my Delta 46-460 will allow --- just over 12 inches in diamature, except the Star Patter one on the top row. I had to cut it down to about 11.5 inches to get some chipping out.

I don't know about a Tutorial, but I'll try and tell how I do it. I'll put this on a different Thread titled: "How I make a 3D looking Box"

Bill - very nice work by both you and your wife on all these platters! Love the 3D effect to some of the inlays! Thanks for sharing!
