Started with an elm closed form and decided to do some carving on it (was inspired by a Trent Bosch video). The finish is lacquer. It is about 7 inches tall.

Nicely done Dennis! Great form and really nice relief carving! Also really like the color of the wood and how it plays into the whole leaf thing!

Very nice work! Thanks for sharing!

Dennis,

You are sure getting artsy. Looks good. I saw the Trent Bosch video also, but have not worked up the nerve to start carving. When are you coming back to meetings at East Texas Woodturners in Tyler? Guess your are planning on attending SWAT next month anyway and maybe I'll see you there.

Whoa, Dennis!! I like this piece! Not familiar with Trent Bosch, but looks like I need to be - this one is really sharp. Since I have become somewhat enamored with dyes for the moment - makes me wonder what that would look like with some fall colors on the leaves????

Beautiful job on the carving and the color of the wood is terrific for it. The general shape and color remind me a of the American Elms and beech I planted along my driveway.

That's a nice looking piece. I love the form and color... The bottom of the piece almost looks like leather to me. It's the kind of piece that begs to be held.

Dennis, very nice work and wood, I remember seeing something similar to this from Trent Bosch a couple years ago. He also turned an insert to go in the larger opening that only had about a half inch hole inserted it while wet (pliable) and used a baloon to hold it in place while glue dried. Looked very cool.

I have been going to get at 2 or 3 pieces sitting on my bench waiting for some carving, so now I have some more inspiration to get at them! I have some orders for "BIG" bowls 12-14" were not big enough for one of the gallery customers, so I am going for the 16-20" range, then maybe some carving.

Nice job and a great use of the heart and sapwood,

Jeff

I've been trying to wrap my head around a way to do a turning with flower petals. You just answered my questions Dennis. Thank you!!

Great piece!! :)

Clever use of the different hues of the wood on the leaves.
Love the flowing of the leaves tip.
Good idea, I record it...

Well done! One has to be careful not to get too carried away with the carvings. I saw one that was carved leaves over the entire vessel. Too much! This is just right enough. Only thing it needs is a turned flower sticking out!

Dennis,

A unique form on some interesting wood. The addition of the carving adds to the beauty without overpowering the natural beauty of the wood and the form.

I like it!
