Brass doorknobs

I have always sprayed polished brass with polyurethane, and it has stood up well for decades. However when I tried it on a doorknob, it came off in a few months. It must be the skin oils, etc. Can anyone suggest something which will hold up on polished brass that is touched daily?

There is a special heavy bodied lacquer that manufacturers use. Try searching the restoration hardware sites.
