Apple announced this today, so if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us to copy :)

Just thought you might be interested in this. There is always the question asked " If I have this engraved will apple still warranty this? " Well I called apple and got the official word. Here is what they sent me in an email:

"Hi there, Adam.

Thank you for contacting Apple!

We spoke recently in regards to you inquiring about laser engraving and if it would be covered by Apples warranty. I informed you that normally engraving on the back that is not done specifically from Apple is not covered by Apple (example: Using a knife to carve in your name, etc).
However, if your using a professional laser engraving service, we normally make exceptions for this as technically its not considered accidental damage.

Hopefully this will clarify any questions or concerns you had regarding the call.

Happy holidays,

Well Hope that clarifies things for everyone!

Hmmm, "normally make exceptions" gives them an out if they want to use it. I would still tell the customer that it may void their warranty and have them sign something that they acknowledge the potential warranty issue.

Here is the problem, if your battery needs to be serviced, apple will swap your iPad for another one (battery is not covered under warranty), and this may be one of those exceptions that they talk about.

Joe, that's a guarantee...

Last year there was a case of an XBox 360 being sent back to MS for the red ring o' death syndrome. They sent him back a working refurb. The problem was, the unit he sent in was a limited-edition (i.e., there was only one) Halo box, won via an MS-sponsored contest, airbrushed by a famous games-type graphic artists and signed by the head creator of the Halo game. He only managed to get the original back (with a new motherboard) when he complained to one of the tech blogs. It made it all of the way to good ol' Bill himself before it was returned to the guy.

But think of it this way... even if you etch it and it gets replaced with a blank slate, the person can't blame you, and you may get a second job out of it redoing the design ;)

This is too funny! We have an Ipad and planned to etch it the day we bought it. We are going to etch a picture on the back. Will post as soon as it's done.
