In a fortnight it will be the Perth Wood Show. It will be an opportunity to catch up with woodworking friends from the other side of Oz. One is Chris Vesper, and the plan is to join him on his stand and demonstrate cutting dovetails, which will offer an opportunity to show off some of his amazing marking tools.

So I need to take a few tools - definitely no cutting gauge or square needed! Should I take my marking knife .. ! :) Well I do need a dovetail saw, a fretsaw ... and chisels.

So I decided to build a travel box for the Stanley #750 chisels, a recent project, something that might be more appropriate for the stand than a leather roll (although the latter has its place .. which would you use).

I also made one more chisel to add to the collection. This is now complete. I do not need more.

West Australian She-oak handles (hard enough to be survive a strike from a hammer).

7 chisels for dovetailing: 1/8", 3/16, 1/4. 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, and 1". The 1/8" and 3/16" were ground from 1/4" blades. All have been hollow ground to a sharp edge on the shoulders.

The wooden bar on the lid is to keep the chisels in place when the box is upended.

Now which saw to take .... ?

A fitting box for chisels...
If they are going to go on the road, it may as well be in style.
Great job Derek.

Those are beautiful Derek! Definitely the nicest set I have ever seen, I really like the box... who needs a leather tool roll when ya got a rig like that!

Nice box Derek. Also love the handles on those chisels. I have one of Chris's tools and would say it is one of my favorites.

Great box, Derek. Gives me an idea for my LN's.
Quick question. Why did you put the latch where you did instead of centering it?
I know it doesn't have anything to do with the drain water going the opposite direction down under.

....Quick question. Why did you put the latch where you did instead of centering it?....

I wondered the same thing Tom!....I imagine he did it because the bulk of the weight (the handles) are concentrated in that corner???

Very nice box for some beautiful chisels....

Hi Tom

You are not the only one to wonder about this. The latch is off centre ... well just because I thought it looked a little different. It's boring when everything is perfectly symmetrical. :)

Probably to put it within easier reach if the box were to be wall-mounted.

The box doubles as a place to rest the chisels when they are used.

What I would like to find are a set of very small split hinges for this box. This would allow the lid to be removed and the main section of the box could lie on the bench top, which would save some space.
