Had a small piece of the same spalted maple I used for the "Aladdin's Other Lamp" HF. Looked like it would make a nice mini vase. See what you think. I had to do some grinding on one of my scrapers to get inside this one.

That is a sweet little pot, James! I'd call it cute but the wood... my god.. the wood. That's what I think of when I hear "spalted". Rarely see it though...

Wow!!!
Dimensions?

It's about 3-3/8" tall by about 2" wide. Wall thickness is relatively thick at 1/4" to 3/8" Don't really have any good hollowing tools especially for something this small.

Great piece of wood and showcased very well in your turning. Nicely done.

the wood on this one really makes it a special turning! Your turning is very good on this piece.

I would say that if one was looking up a definition of spalting, that this picture should be in the dictionary beside the definition to illustrate the concept!

James, that is a really nice piece.....congrats!

JD, excellent form on this one, and just as with the other piece, the wood is beautiful. I guess making those pens gives one the patience for the smaller stuff!!:D Not sure I could pull off one of these!

James nice work, if you painted it black it would still look good, with this very nice spalting it is a beaut, well done and thanks for posting

James,
Nothing but good...scratch that...great comments on this one.

The wood alone would make me happy with even a mediocre turning...but this is a very well balanced piece, a nice rim detail...you have a winner there.

Just to think that another few months of that spalting would have likely turned it to punk and you've immortalized it!

Really, a super job on a super piece of wood!!:):)

Fabulous piece of wood James, nice form, finish & photography. When I looked at that vase beside the ruler, I said "no way!" Very deceiving, looked like it could be 10" tall:).
Thanks for posting, this is going in my folder to remind me that real spalt can sometimes be found.

Great work. I think that the way it tricks the eye when there is no size reference is a tribute to your great work on the proportions. It could be a foot tall in the other pictures.

Yeah, I thought about doing just that because I had already made one pen from it. See it here if you want to see how it looks as a pen. http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=140068

PM me your address and I will send you enough for half dozen pen blanks. Just catch the postage.
