I apologize. I am sure this has been answered more than once, but my search is fruitless.

What is the difference between tiger maple and curly maple? Then what is red curly maple? When I do a google image search they look identical to me.

Thanks.

To me Tiger maple and Curly Maple are the same with maybe a touch more figure in the Tiger. Also have Fiddleback Maple which I think is the most densely figured of the three and generally reservered for musical instruments, guitars and the backs of Violins, Violas, etc...

And of course there's always quilted Maple....

All tiger maple is curly, but all curly maple is not tiger striped. Fiddleback is usually a tiger striped maple. Curly red maple is probably from a red maple tree, which is considered to be a soft maple. Tiger maple generally has pronounced stripes of light and dark that would change as the light hits the wood. They can all come from the same tree. http://www.home.earthlink.net/~us71na/maplebox.jpg. Notice how the top has more pronounced stripes than the sides. Yet all of these pieces came form the same piece of wood.
