okay, so I started to put this in the citrus acid bath thread, but since I am going all the way through this one, I figured I would just start a new thread....

Picked this up last week, it got here wednesday.... Got to start on it today.

Not bad, but alot of grime in the corners and what not, so off the the bath it goes, which is where it is now....sorry, forgot to take close up before pics....

the plane sole looks really dark in this last pic, but it is clean...

stay tuned, in another hour or so I will take it all out dry everything off, and oil the parts down and we can see the end result. Of course I wont oil where paint needs to go, hopefully I can spray it tomorrow....

John it looks good so far. Do you remember the ratio you mixed the citric acid? Also you mentioned paint. What type and number of coats do you plan to use?

Thanks.

Eric

well this wall paper tray holds a full gallon of water, but add parts to it and it overflows, so I used maybe .8 of a gallon, and 1/3 cup of citric acid, but I let everything soak over two hours before I scrubbed anything, and once I did it started to literally wipe off the rust under the wire brush. The biggest problem I have is the tray is 22 inches long, the plane is 24......

paint... I dunno, probably something like engine block spray bomb or something... something high gloss....as many light coats as it takes to look good....with a primer coat first....

Masking is a pain in the wazoo, but I highly recommend it.

I like type 9s, but then there aren't too many early types I do not like.

First I touched up the handles a little bit... just sanded the gunk off of them and smoothed them back to comfort.... wiped on a few coats of BLO

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/trainman0978/DSCN2469.jpg

Then took all the parts out, dried them, put a light coat of sewing machine oil on them... ( all except the frog and the plane body )

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/trainman0978/DSCN2487.jpg

I am not pushing those pins out for the depth adjuster and the lateral....

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/trainman0978/DSCN2486.jpg

then the plane body

scrubbed and scrubbed.... good as it gets without using another stripping agent

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/trainman0978/DSCN2484.jpg

taped off... Jim I was taping this thing up probably when you posted your comment...haha

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/trainman0978/DSCN2494.jpg

and a coat of flat black primer... It looks heavy , but its just the sunlight...

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j87/trainman0978/DSCN2496.jpg

gonna let this dry and head up to Wally world and grab something to cook for dinner while this dries, and a can of high gloss something or other to finish it off....

I will post more pics tonight once I get done with it.

I am going to order a hock blade and breaker for it next payday. I could probably salvage this blade, but I wanna do it right, and I want a new blade for it... I checked it with my pinnacle 24" rule, while not a machinist straight edge, its pretty straight...and it doesn't let any light between it and the plane's sole, So very little lapping will be done.

Looks great. The hock blade and chipbreaker made a huge difference with mine. It works so well that I did not bother to lap the bottom.

Looks great so far... It is always satisfying when it is all done and looks like new... only better because it is old.

funny thing that I said to my friend the other day...
"They don't make them like they used to, or maybe all the junk they used to make already broke and is forgotten, so now all that is left is the good stuff... I don't know."

Looking good so far.

The knob looks like it is either from an older type or someone did like me and put a bead around the base.

So Jim... This isn't the original front knob for this plane?

Paint is still tacky.... gonna let it get good and dry before I put all back together....

Couple more hours before I put it back together....

I think the bead around the base of the knob went out with the type 5. I also noticed that the brass for the knob and tote did not match.

Someone may have put a bead on the knob later. I did with one of mine just for the fun of it.

I have found that even when the paint feels dry it is still soft and is easy to mess up. Be patient and give it a few extra days to set.

I left it untouched after i unmasked it last night... put it together this morning. I am not going to try to use it for a few days though. I mainly wanted to see what it would look like put together... so here it is.

Jim, funny... my wife said the same thing.

Jerry and Terry, thanks... I am completely thrilled with this thing. I worked on this old blade for an hour or two today. Got it flat across the back, Honed ground down the bevel on 320 grit ( the previous owner had about four different angles ground into the edge... ) I ground it to 30 degrees.... I couldnt help it... I clamped down a piece of cherry that was rough.... planed it flat. The edges got smooth too.... but not square. That will take some practice.

All in all though.... the jointer plane is one heck of a tool. That hock blade will be ordered next friday. Should make it a great tool.

You have done a very nice job and that plane will be a great performer, I'm sure. Excellent masking. Other than the japanning, it was in good shape. It will look even better with some wood dust and shavings on it.
