I've decided to try my hand at veneering, so I picked up some pieces for box lid panels, some side table tops and one of those veneer faced clocks that David Marks did on Woodworks. Pictured are Figured English Sycamore, Wenge, and Walnut burl. The Walnut is quartermatched and will be used for the tops of two side tables. There's a close-up of the Sycamore as well.

I'm working on some business card holders (Wood, Sept, 04 #157) using Walnut and Maple, and decided to make a few with a stripe of the Sycamore veneer inlaid. I've included a dry fit of my first attempt at cutting the veneer. It came out ok, but I'm not real happy with the fit and was wondering if I could get some tips. Do I need to pick up one of the veneer saws, or can I get nice clean cuts with a razor and straightedge? I used scissors at a very slow pace for my first run.

I also picked up some birdseye Maple to make a couple of the keepsake boxes from Wood Magazine. I'm going to use Cherry instead of Bubinga though.

But wait, there's more! I also just received four sets of planer knives for my Ridgid planer. I picked them up on e-bay for $68.00.

And finally, a hockey team gloat. LOML and I just came back from watching our New Mexico Scorpions thump the Shreveport Mudbugs 5 to 1. Tonight was Armed Forces Appreciation Night. The team did a wonderful job honoring those who have fallen, and appreciating those who are serving. All five branches of the US Armed Services were on hand to be cheered. The US Air Force awarded the Scorpions with the 2004 Spirit Award. It is a yearly award given to a professional sports team in recognition of service and support for the US Air Force. We beat out the Houston Astros for this years award. It was a great night at the arena, and the Scorps looked Scary Sharp in their US Air Force jerseys. :D
And because I just can't resist (you hockey fans will understand)...the Scorpions are perfect at home on the penalty kill so far this year. In nine home games so far, eight different teams have had a combined 45 powerplay oportunities, and the Scorp's have not allowed one goal.

Ok, the hockey ramblings are done...for now. :D
