I was asked to donate something for SWAT 2 for 1 Raffle coming up in August in Waco. This cedar bowl was selected by a couple of the local turners wives over some Bradford Pear pieces. It is 10 1/2" D x 2 1/2" H and about 3/8" WT to avoid turning through in a couple of areas. Finish is buff with tripoli, danish oil/polyurethane mix (5 coats) and Renaissance wax.

Fantastic donation Tom. That's a really nice piece of cedar, very deep color with great highlighting from the sapwood. Perfect finish!

Thomas, Nice job. That's some of the prettiest cedar I've ever seen. Nice story too.

Thanks for the comments. I was definitely surprised to be asked for a donation piece for SWAT. I have turned 4 or 5 other cedar bowls similar to this one. It seems that there is always a certain amount of challenge to make the largest diameter out of the section leaving some of the sapwood and external surfaces and then not turn through when doing the hollowing that add to the character of the bowl. Several have ended up as definite fruit or yarn bowls. I turned one for a friend and my wife hated for me to give it away, but then she was happy with the next one that had even more vivid color and character and she did not complain about the voids. Cedar is not my favorite, but the color does seem to catch the eye. See http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=131106&page=2
