View Full Version : Question on finishing a threaded urn

The urn is maple with a walnut threaded collar and lid. I put paste wax on the threads to lubricate them. Danish Oil or Antique Oil will be used for finish. Will the oil work alright on the paste waxed threads, or should I avoid getting oil on them? Or should I remove the wax before finishing? I needed to wax the threads to make sure I had the right fit, burnishing them by working the threads back and forth. Any thoughts?

How about a picture?
The solvents in the oil will likely dissolve the wax but you can put more wax on later, should not be a problem.

If you already have wax on the threads ----I would leave them alone.

Here's some pictures. First, the two pieces;

Here they are together;

Here is the collar in the urn, not yet glued;

And fitted in the urn;

I put paste wax on the threads for lubrication while checking the fit. Now I'm about ready to put finish on the entire piece and I'm wondering if it would be best to remove the paste wax with solvent before finishing with DO or AO. The collar will be glued in place before finish.

Richard - that is some really nice work!

If it were me - I would remove the wax as much as possible and then coat everything with the oil. After it dries - then I would use the wax again to lube the threads. My thoughts are if you are going to coat the wood with a finish - make sure to coat all of it. Hopefully, this prevents the non-coated section from drying out and cracking.
