Last night at our Wood Guild Benoit Avery was a guest with us demonstrating first a small Lidded Box. The first picture shows him with his host Richard Raffan Pic 2 with one of his Signature pieces that involve carving decoration. He is represented in many fine collections around the world. He was visiting Richard Raffan at his home both of them travelling a thousand odd miles to a Woodturning Symposium today in Brisbane Australia as feature Demonstrators.
Benoit gave a quick demo turning his style of small lidded box in Briar wood. Using our club Vicmarc VL100 and chuck he rough turned, removed the tail stock. He then turned the top, parted that then constructed a circular hole for the box and finished the lid fit, parted that then jam fit the box to do the base then jam fit the lid to finish that.

He then showed a large number of slides made by French contempories as well as his own to show the European trends in turning today. He also sold some small boxes tothose present.

Altogether veryinteresting and special.

Regards Peter.

Thanks for sharing the photos with the rest of us, Peter. Richard Raffan is one of those I would like to meet, and pick his brain. :) Benoit looks pretty young, doesn't he? Must have gotten a pretty good start as a youngster. He's a good'n. :)

Looks like a great experience all the way around.

Seems strange to see people in coats and warm hats when it's hotter than hell on this side of the equator. Enjoy the cool weather for the rest of us.

It's weird, isn't it? Australian Snowbirds go North. :D

Peter, I had the pleasure of being a demonstrator last year in Ireland along with Benoit - great guy and very skilled turner. We had the challenge of judging the event's instant gallery for awards - a very trying experience.
