Greetings Creekers:

In March Creeker Joe Little and I traded turning blanks, his 12x12x3 Butternut for a similar sized Sweetgum.

Well the Butternut came to the front of the queue a couple of weeks ago and this is what emerged:

The pedestal platter is about 11 1/2 across and 3 1/2 high. Homebrew wipe on Poly finish.

The Butternut is easy to turn and finish. If you come across any I sure recommend you give it a twirl.

And to Joe, thanks for the trade, I enjoy our transaction and adding a new species to my "ya, I've turned some of that" list.

Best regards, Tom, in Georgia, always willing to trade blanks.

That looks good, Tom. Trading can be fun... I'll keep you in mind next time I get ready to do a swap.

Looks real nice Tom. Butternut is still on my "to turn" list. Hope that cherry is making it's way to the front of the que.

Tom, Joe and I did a wood trade some time ago, and the Butternut is some of the nicest wood I have turned - beautiful character with the worm holes. It sure was bone dry!! The bowls weigh near nothing.

That came out really nice, how did you finish it? Yes trading wood was fun and I got some interesting projects to do. I have not yet turned the sweet gum but will get to it when it cools off a little.

Joe, my standard finish is home-brew poly. I mix small batches, 6-8 oz, about 50/50 with mineral spirits and apply it with pieces of old tee shirts. Wipe on a coat and keep at it until you get to 6 or 8 coats. I use micro-mesh to smooth and Beall Buff system to polish.

If you get more Butternut let me know!

Best regards, Tom
