alright everyone, lets hear a few of your best Craigslist scores??

here are just a few of my best scores

Porter Cable 557 biscuit joiner LNIB - $25

Hegner scroll saw $75

Ridgid 14" band saw - traded for some ammunition

Delta 12 inch planer Mint - $40

Craftsman 17" drill press, Like New $175

Jet DC1100 New $150

Jim Terrill

6" Jet jointer- $50
Delta Contractor saw- $200
Dewalt Biscuit joiner (new)- $60 plus a bunch of oak that came with the above
3 honing oilstones and guide - $15
Delta midi lathe and 6 crown turning tools -$160
Laguna 16" band saw with 3 3/4" blades and 1 1/4" blade - $500

Most recent one- $300 for as much as I wanted from a barn, the woman's grandfather used to build cabinets and she wanted it gone, so there were huge piles of partially built oak cabinets as well as mahogany, cherry, oak and 8/4 by 15" wide hard maple slabs as well as piles of different cherry moldings. I took 1 sheet of 3/4" mdf but there were another 3 that I left, along with a lot of other cabinet parts that I just couldn't justify.

Blonde, about 5' 6", ... oh, wait, you mean tools. Sorry. I've sold much more on CL than I've bought, but I recently got a Ryobi 1 1/2 hp router, plus router table, plus a like new Delta benchtop jointer, all for $140. Not spectacular, but not bad...

I don't buy much on craig's list because I don't have time to surf it. I did manage to snag a Grizzly 18/36 drum sander in excellent condition for $450.

Everyone but my wife would say I have made off like a bandit on CL during the past year and a half!

I must say it's a dead-heat between the Woodmaster 3820 7.5hp double drum sander for $1200! Getting to eat lunch at Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston MO (home of the throwed rolls) was an added perk!

http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/zzarus/3820Rear.jpg

and...the Shop Fox W1739 Moulder with a TON of knives and eliptical jig for $675! I treated myself to Arthur Bryant's BBQ in Kansas City that trip!

Got a homemade band saw and table saw (both gilbert kits) along with a 1950's craftsman wood lathe, all for free. I drove 150 miles one way to pick them up but with the lathe and the 2 hp 220 volt motor that was on the tablesaw I just couldn't pass it up.

1960's craftsman 6" jointer for $40. Drove 75 miles to get it and when I got there he threw in a Bluegrass No. 9 plane, a stanley 220 and 120 block plane, a japanese pull saw, craftsman dovetail saw, AMT right and left handed offset back saw, and an old post office box door, and an old jeweler's saw

I recently bought my first and so far only item off of CL, a Powermatic model 90 lathe in excellent condition. The extras made the $600 deal that much better.

An even better experience than that however is a large set of Fine Woodworking mags I just bought from SMC's very own Jim Barrett. For the most part FWW caters more toward technique rather than to the 'gear-head' crowd making them somewhat timeless magazines. I get the feeling that Jim's intent was to get them into appreciative hands rather than to try to get a fair value for them. If that was in fact his goal, he has certainly achieved it with me. It also reaffirms my impression that there is generally a very nice bunch of people on this forum.

The guy I work with just got a Ritter 375 V pneumatic door framing clamp table. It looks about new, works fine and has an extra clamp and regulator. Online new it lists for about $4500 - he got it for $40. It cost about ten times the machine cost to ship it as it weighs 850 pounds. The shop he bought it from said they were changing processes and didn't need it any more. Why $40 I couldn't say.

This is the same guy who bought an original (1938 or 1939) Delta Unisaw off Craigslist about three years ago for $50. In addition to being a collector's item it has cut several thousand feet of wood. Originally it took new belts and a tuneup but after the use it's seen had to have a new arbor not long ago but the motor is still performing like a champ. No shipping as it was less than a hundred miles away and close enough to pick up.

I bought a floor sander that's made to go under radiators, it's commonly called a Duckbill sander or something similar. Mine's made by Porter-Cable. I bought it and a Clarke EZ-8 drum sander last fall from a floor place that was cutting back on equipment to save money in tough times. The manager sheepishly called me a day or two later, wanting to buy the Duckbill PC back since he had been informed by the floor sanding crew that he'd sold the wrong machine to me. Like, their best machine and not one of the more used models. Hmm, I STILL have the Duckbill sander, but DID say that I might sell it back to them once I'm done finishing all my floors.:D:D:D

In the last year:

PM66 table saw, jet jjscx 6 inch jointer, pm 73 dust collector for $1200 (not too bad of a price I thought)

Pneumatic press - $40 This would cost me well over a thousand to build and it weighs about 700 lbs. Will be perfect for veneering

And my best gloat is a PM 27 5hp shaper for $180

C.R. Onsrud Inverted Pin Router (there big one)

Most recent was a 5hp Torit cyclone with baghouse and over a hundred feet of spiral pipe, fittings and blast gates for $850. Just finished the wiring on that tonight.

A Delta Hybrid cabinet saw for 500. I thought is was a Uni when I bought it. Checked the serial number and discovered it was a hybrid. I'm very happy with the purchase. It has done everything I've asked it to do. Got a Delta DJ-15 in perfect condition from an Air Force officer for 400. They were shipping him off to Thailand so he needed to lighten the load. I have passed on some great deals too. Just didn't have the disposable income at the time.

Van, must be shopping on the same Craigslist as I do, nothing but garbage around here... But I almost had...

A "hydraulic bord stretcher" ($500)

A "Blade Desharpener" ($150)

A whole bunch of cinderblocks ($1 each) unfortunately I requested too much information on the cinder block deal, and was denied the deal of a lifetime :D:p

(sorry I couldn't resist)

I still check multiple times a day hoping for that one good deal to finally show up, probably will happen when I am flat broke :(

An SCMI S520 planer with about 2 hours on it--basically brand new. $1000 I let my school district have it as I already have a PM180 that I am happy with. BTW, includes the power height option!

Other favorite craigslist purchase was a like-new Multi-Router with a PC690 router for $1500. Found another one about 6-months later that my uncle got for $1200, but not in as nice shape.

Wow, Brian, those are impressive!

The jointer needed new cutter head bearings ($10) and the planer needed nothing. Both came from a small shop making windows. I don`t know why one of the shop employees didn`t buy the planer as a couple of them commented on it being a really nice machine when my brother and I picked it up. It runs great and has a small footprint, although I wish it had cast iron infeed/outfeed tables instead of a roller on each side. Then again I shouldn`t complain.

My best scores have been...

Northern Industrial 16 speed floor drill press $75.00. Needed 2 fasteners, some lubrication, and some rust removal.

5/4 Black Walnut shorts $1.00 / bd/ft. And he charged for 4/4!

100 ft 4" S&D PVC pipe in 10' joints $20.00.

Ryobi BT3000SX table saw for parts. $10.00, sold the parts off for $120.00

Ryobi BT3000 table saw complete minus guard / riving knife. $20.00, added riving knife / guard and donated to church organization that works with Habitat for Humanity.

There are a couple of items I am keeping an eye open for on CL...

#1. Central Machinery, oh heck, just about any 110V 8" jointer for under $250.00. The Central Machinery 8" tends to come up every so often for about $200.00... From what I have seen add some Freud knives to them, and they are a good basic machine. Of course OLD Rockwell jointers would be preferred but are usually out of my $$ range...

#2. A bench top mortiser. I would love the Grizzly or Shop Fox 3/4 HP models, but would consider Delta, or Jet as long as the $$ is right...

#3. Higher quality quick release bench vise. They don't come up often, but I have seen a few old Record 9" quick release vises listed...

#4. Vintage hand planes... I missed some pre WW2 Stanley planes last week. Looked like a #4 and a #5... I have those sizes in cheap imports so I passed, but I would REALLY like a jointer plane...

alright everyone, lets hear a few of your best Craigslist scores??

Dunno about my best score, but my most recent is a customer who wants a pub height table for her dining room table, and she wants it to be 5' X 5'.

Unfortunately, none of the furniture stores/companies make them in that size.

Guess I'll just have to take the commission (several thousands), and make it for her.

Oh well, I guess life could be worse.

My favorite score on craigslist is a Lie Nielsen block plane for $20.

The most useful score I've found on craigslist is 10,000ea 13"x17" ziplock bags for free.

The most sentimental score I've found on the net was not on craigslist, but was on myspace and that is where my wife found me.

My most recent is the 1981 PM90 that I got at auction for $300. Yeah, it needs a paint job, needed a VFD, but still a great price for a great machine. Could have gotten it for $50 if the ONE other bidder hadn't been there! But I guess he's saying the same thing right now... And yes, it included the banjo, tool rests, chip cover, and tailsock...

A Festool C-12 drill for $180. Used only once on a cabinet install. The guy had 5 of them for sale. New price in 2008 was $415. I paid for shipping and got the guy to agree to it.

wow... you guys do really find nice scores.
Back when I was in Edmonton (up there), I picked up the following (without motor) for $90:

168059

Spent some time on it, replaced bearings, belt, and added a motor to it, painted:

168060

then realized I don't use it quite as often as I thought and was getting dust. Listed it for $600 and got a bidding war (multiple offers). Sold it for that amount.

I've come to the conclusion that in our area, people go buy stuff from HF and than try to sell it on CL for more than they paid for it. I have yet to find a deal on tools locally. I did get a nice Devilbiss paint pot, hoses and spray gun while I was visiting in Portland, Ore. for $75. Been used one time. It is nice.

My best score was not necessarily what I bought, but how it all played out...

Some guy was selling an old Ryobi RAS for $40 and a 16 gauge brad nailer for $25. I called him to let him know I was interested. He gave me model info, etc., and we set up a time to meet.

Meanwhile, I discovered that the RAS had been recalled. Ryobi was offering $75 for the return of the motor (they would pay the shipping as well).

So...I went to look at the nailer and told the guy about the recall. He said, "Naw, too much trouble. If you want the RAS you can still have it for $40."

Bottomline, I bought the stuff...I returned the motor...and made $10.

I am just starting to piece together a garage workshop... I haven't picked it up yet, but told the guy I would buy it... A Dewalt DW746 Table saw with the outfeed table, 52" fence, original 30" fence, and mobile base for $500. Maybe not a HOT deal, but I figured he had $1600 in it. Seems like a descent start for the heart of the shop.

I've given up on Craigslist out here. All I see are:

- ban saws
- 7 in half power saws (i.e 7 1/4" circular saws)
- TOOLS TOOLS TOOLS (a cheap tool box full of junk open end wrenches...half of them are missing...and some chewed up screwdrivers)
- Some guy trying to sell an old drill press for $500 (it has a vice...it's aligned and ready to go....ohhhh...ahhhhh)
- Estate Sale....EVERYTHING MUST GO!!!!!!! (a bunch of rust buckets that needed one of everything 50 years ago)
- bang saws

etc etc

It seems like there's two diametrically opposed forces at work these days:

1) "I'll scan Craigslist...there's surely some idiot that will sell me their new Unisaw for $10 because he needs the cash"
and
2) "I'll post my old Atlas drill press for $800....there's surely some idiot that doesn't know what things are worth and will buy this thing from me"

LOL....I'm still waiting for my score! :)

I have gotten some really good deals on CL lately as well as some okay deals, and I have also had success selling on craigslist and even making a profit from it. Recently I bought a Delta 14" bandsaw for $300 which wasn't bad but wasn't great but two weeks later I bought another one same model (28-243) for $120 and cleaned it up 2 hours max then sold it for $300 (which in effect lowered the price I paid for mine to $120). I sold my old 12" Craftsman Bandsaw for $175 (paid 150 when I bought it) The guy that bought the Cman bandsaw started looking at my Cman 12" benchtop drill press so I sold it to him for $100. I then drove up to Denver bought a Ridgid Table saw (3650) for $175 and cleaned it up took off the stock rails and mounted a unifence on it (I paid $130 for the unifence a few months back on CL). On the same trip I picked up a Jet JDP-17mf for $250 (probably a little high but it was what I was looking for). Yesterday I picked up a Delta AP 400 Dust collector for $130 with a wireless remote included. Another great deal I got, although it wasn't on Craigslist was from a pawn shop, I got a brand new in the the box sealed Ridgid Planer for $200 and a Dewalt DW708 12" sliding miter saw for $200 same trip. I also recently found a dewalt cordless 18 volt angle drill for $87.99 at Lowes on clearance, didn't want the drill just the batteries, and now I'm selling the drill to recoup most of that money I paid for the batteries. I just started getting into woodworking in October of 2010 and I have built up a pretty nice collection of tools in a short time as I replaced my handyman type tool collection with woodworking tools. Woodworking isn't cheap but craigslist sure helps make it more affordable if you know where to look and if you are patient enough to wait for the right deal.

I would like to see some deals where the price was fair but the machine exceeded expectations in its performance. If the criteria is cheap price solely it means the deal was crappy for the seller. If we concentrate on price we can't also complain about losing our manufacturing base, outsourcing of jobs, losing our benefits, etc. As a nation our addiction to low prices is coming at a high cost. Does intended for Craigslist count?

A little over a month ago, a fellow in the neighborhood had tossed a Delta 10" CMS on the curb for trash. I happened to be driving by when he was hauling it out, so I took it off his hands, he told me he was throwing it out because it cut so poorly...

I cleaned it up, checked the runout (fine) checked the original blade and found damaged teeth which was what was probably causing his rough cuts. I polished the aluminum surfaces and got it as clean as I could, tossed a takeoff, very lightly used Irwin Marathon 80T on it that I was going to throw out. I adjusted it up so everything was square, and was going to take some pics and post it on Craigslist for $75.00 and see if there were any takers...

Before I could even snap a pic, a colleague of mine mentioned he had a NIB, never opened Central Machinery mortiser that somebody gave him as a gift, but he already had a mortiser, and could use a miter saw... So we worked out a trade...

So effectively I have a mortising machine for the cost of a partial can of Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish, and a lousy blade I got for next to nothing on clearance... All told less than $10.00

It's funny, I look back and see my old post in this thread and I was mentioning looking for a mortiser... I guess patience paid off...

So my first good Craigslist find that I am happy to keep around my shop is the Northern Industrial Drill Press...
204870

And of course the newest one, the mortiser, I guess they both make holes, just one round, the other square...

Powermatic 71 12" cabinet saw $1!!!!! 3ph 5hp.
OK, that was my fathers score but I helped him rebuild it and he gave it to me. The guy rented the space and it came with the saw. He didn't want to scrap the saw... and was very helpful in loading the saw for my father.

Last weekend I scored a Porter Cable 314 worm drive trim saw for $33. I have been looking at these saws for probably ten plus years now.

$100 for an ultrasonic blind cleaner is right up at the top of my list of good deals. It was originally a $9000 unit. It hasn't seen any blinds yet but it is excellent for old car parts, dirty tools, riffles and what ever else I can think of to put in there.

$100 Davis and Wells Horizontal boring machine. The slide had a cracked bearing. It as good as new since I replaced it.

$25 Bosch jig saw in perfect shape was a good deal as I really needed a decent jig saw.

$10 Porter Cable 505 1/2 sheet sander WITH the dust collector. (I now have 4 of these so I don't have to change paper between different grits)

I have had one of those stupid 6" harbor freight jointers for about 10 years now. I can't upgrade the stupid thing because it works too well. Wish I paid the extra for the 8" when I bought my 6"... but the stupid 6" has never really not done the job for me. Longer tables would be nice though. I use my 6" a lot and I just use the cheap 6" blades.

I have my list of things I look for... eventually they will come up. I spent at least 10 years looking for a horizontal boring machine... found a Davis and Wells for $100 locally. I just picked up a 4 1/2" Porter Cable trim saw last weekend for $33. I don't know how long I have been looking for one after reading on here how much they are liked.

I have gotten a ton of stuff off of CL to outfit my little dungeon garage shop. I have purchased 3 Shopsmith machines. The first one was an early 60's Mark VII which was only made for a few years and tilts both left and right for over table/under table operations which the original Mark V could not do. I also got the 4" Jointer and Scroll saw SPT's with that find for $300. I completely tore it down and replaced all the rolling gear bearings, belts etc. and cleaned it up and it has worked perfectly ever since. I then found a 54' Mark V that was in horrible condition but was only $99 on Ebay that i won on the last day of the auction because nobody else wanted it. I took that machine down to bare metal and completely restored it planning on selling it but couldn't get any interest in it and it is better than new after i finished with it. Then the best one was a Shopsmith DC 3300 dust collector that the guy wanted $30 for I went to look at it and he also had a complete 84' Shopsmith Mark V machine with many extras. I wasn't looking for another SS but when he said do you want it and told me he only wanted $85 for it I couldn't say no. The dust collector was plug and play and I did the bearings and belts on the Mark V. I recently scored a nice Devilbiss 80 Ga. 220 V. two stage twin cylinder compressor for $550. Guy wanted $800 and I haggled him down to $550 once we got into my garage and I smelled smoke inside the filter element. The thing runs perfectly needs only the auto-shutoff valve replaced at some point (leaks) but i think that was a damn good deal as those compressors never list for less than $800 and usually more than that. Now I have something that can handle my small blast cabinet. Too many other smaller deals. I sold my other compressor on CL one week later for $50 more than I bought it for on CL. I love CL but you have to be very persistent checking and really fast as the really good stuff doesn't last long at all.

Here is the completely restored 54' Mark V

Just a few of the tools I bought watching Craigslist

Baldor 1022W 1 HP 10 inch low speed grinder $150
Delta 31-250 18x36 drum sander $300
Powermatic 90 lathe $400
Oliver 192D 20 inch band saw $200
Rockwell Super 900 radial arm saw $50
Jet DC1182 dust collector $150
All were in working order, plug and play. I did rebuild the PM90 headstock, new bearings and a lot of cleaning up on the Reeves drive. The Oliver band saw got all new bearings and long overdue rubber tires. The radial arm saw got stripped and painted and a new stock table

I keep thinking about "upgrading" to the newer bandsaw table, but going from cast iron to aluminum feels like I'm going in the wrong direction. Having had both tables what's your take? I don't really know yet but I do like the aluminum table better than the cast iron one. It is bigger and i had more room to mount the Kreg bandsaw fence that I have. I don't have the OEM bandsaw fence so i had to buy the Kreg fence when I bought the saw. It seems to be just as solid as the cast iron table and maybe more so because it weighs a lot less and the trunnions as you know on this little bandsaw are pretty wimpy. I need to get a couple of new saw blades for it the ones that came with it are shot. I also removed and replaced the original bandsaw guide bushings with roller bearings and that seemed to make a significant difference in the saws performance. I would love to get the Carter guides but they cost way more than i am willing to spend on this little saw. The bearings I used to replace the bushings cost next to nothing so that was a no brainer. Now I just have to modify the housing for some dust collection.

We got back from Texas "early" Sunday morning after a 16 hour round trip.

Pictures will follow after we get it all off loaded & into the shop.

PDF of Excel Spread Sheet Attached.

Steve:)

P.S. Lathe has less than 20 hours on it . . . . and it looks it . . .

Now that is WAY over-gloating when you post a spreadsheet. YOU SUCK!

Thanks for the information. I bought the new cover that had the dust collector port, but haven't actually hooked up a dust collector to it. I suspect it works as well (or as poorly) as most dust collection that attaches to the cover and doing something just below the table will be more effective. I'm not too anxious to work on the dust collection for this saw because it will be mounted and unmounted frequently. To that end, the new table does sound interesting just to reduce the weight. I use Timber Wolf blades on mine, Woodcraft had the right size in stock. I've gotten good service out of them. Biggest thing I've go to address is that scream from the thrust bearing when I'm cutting <g>.

I purchased two 36" bands saws for $200. [$100 ea] Both were running and in decent shape.
Also purchased a Powermatic 20" top planer for $200. Needed sharpening, but runs great.

Yeah, plus it was the first week in my new to me 1800 sqft shop and unloaded the bandsaw with a new to me Big Joe walkie stacker that a friend gave me. All smirks that week. :)

Is someone keeping score? The purchase I am most proud of is a new, on the crate, 36-336 Delta Unisaw for $1500. This was in June 2009 and they were not yet widely available. The guy worked for a contractor supply company and won it from the Jackson, TN Delta plant for being top salesman. Did not have room for a cabinet saw. It was like Christmas opening all the new parts assemblies and putting together something that I didn't have to fix or clean up! BTW the saw has had zero issues.

Jerome,
The squeal is easily fixed by retrofitting some roller bearings in place of the thrust bearing/bushings that come stock on the little bandsaw. I found a post on the Shopsmith Forums from a guy who did it and posted all the specs for the parts. It cost less than $30 if I remember. I got the bearings from VXB Bearings online and the rest of it at the local hardware store. This modification replaces the single bushings with double roller bearings and it quieted the saw down significantly. I will try and find the post and shoot you a link.

Sent you a PM with further info.

I also got a performax 16/32 drum sander for $320.
and last week I got a Bosch trim router for $40 bucks... I hope I can find 3 or 4 more of those little routers for $40 a pop.

Getting to see the workshop of David P. Best while buying his JDS 1.5HP dust collector that looked strangely out place among his Felder and MM machines. When I asked what he was replacing it with he pointed to a sheet metal behemoth in the corner the size of a VW Beetle. I like to think that I bought a ticket to see his workshop and the dust collector was just a door prize.
