I think they add insect pheromones to paint. When I start painting there may be no insects within 20 miles. by the time I am done priming, there are gnats buzzing around and two to three have embedded themselves in the drying paint.

I can just imaging an employee at the paint factory when asked what he does. "oh, I squeeze gnats to extract pheromones that we add to our pain. It lends a special luster. Think shellac." Am I the only one that has noticed?

No bug problems when I repainted my house a few years ago.

The trick is - you paint your neighbor's house first.

For latex paint, the bugs like the moisture.

I've often wondered if I could keep wasps out of the eaves by mixing insect repellent into the paint, or spraying the repellent onto the eaves and then painting over it quickly. If repellent won't work, maybe insecticide would.

No screens on our windows. Never bugs in the house. But start painting and they arrive. Mitchell's suggestion is good but I was tempted to encourage the neighbors to picnic while I paint in hopes that the bugs would prefer food.

It's probably that combined with the CO2 expelled while painting. Mosquitoes LOVE CO2.
