View Full Version : Finish for Salt Boxes

I am making bandsaw and scroll saw boxes for kosher salt. Since they will be in the kitchen and sometimes on the shelf over the stove (subject to heat), I am planning on putting walnut oil on the outside.

My current plans call for no finish on the insides where the salt resides, but wondering if this is correct or good. Also comments on the outside finish would be appreciated.

Any helpful hints?

Having been a chef, I can tell you that salt should not be stored where the heat of the stove will affect it. Pepper can take the heat, but not salt.
I think the walnut oil is fine for a finish once it is cured.

Maurice, thanks - my wife has been storing ours on a ledge above the stove, will have it moved.

Fantastic - cooking tips on sawmillcreek!

Why is that? I can see moisture causing problems but heat?
