This is my first post but I've been lurking around for a few weeks. I recently finished my first bench which officially was the last "big tool" I needed to make my shop complete. I felled some walnuts a couple of years ago and had been drying out the smaller logs for some time. I used them for the leg structure. I also cut down some cedar and used those for the stringers. Unfortunately my sawyer did not have any dried light-colored hardwood (I was hoping for oak) so I used pine for the top with a little walnut, too. If it doesn't hold up I'll get some thing else and rebuild it. but, I'm not too worried. I think it will last for some time. Here are a few pictures.

Thanks for looking...

Paul

What a great bench - and a great use of personal wood!

Nice job and good use of your resources. I can see a tail vise being added a bit later on.

Paul, that is one sharp looking bench. I like the walnut and cedar together.

Great looking bench! Hope it serves you well!

I would spray paint the bolt some brown color to match the walnut
That's my preference. :D

thanks for the nice comments. it was great fun to build and has been even more fun using it. so far one of my sons has helped me build a special box for some cool die he has for his dungeon and dragon games and my other son found a website about 3-string cigar box guitars. so, you know we are building one of those, too.

i love how i can point up to my pasture and say, "that's where this bench came from!"

Nice looking first (or even second or third) bench. I really like the detail work on the feet.
