A friend of a friend heard I was a turner and asked me to make him a bowl and a platter. He said he had a walnut tree that had belonged to his father and the gifts are to be for his dad for Christmas. I went to get the wood today and boy was I shocked!
These are the two big pieces that I worked on today. I got one home and hope to get the rest on Saturday. He said I could have the rest of the wood if I wanted:D
The girl in the pic is the daughter of a friend.

Either that girls is about 8 inches tall, or you got some pretty nice sized hunks of walnut there. Congrats.

Pete, looks like it has been down awhile. That should be some gorgeous wood - hope you have the lathe capacity to maximize the size.

Pete, that is one big trashy piece of wood. You should not even waste your time with it. It's hazardous. Lucky for you, I have a license in trashy walnut removal and can come immediately to pick it up...uhhh...take it away to a far away place for you....

What a score!!! Walnut of that size is hard to come by. Looks like it has been down for a while. If so it should prove to be very stable if you cut your blanks to avoid any checks that formed in the wood.
Happy Turning,
Jack
