I worked hard on these! Just a wooden box covered with Rowmark, laser foil and fake jewels.

Great job! How box is opened?

Nope.....doesn't actually open. It's more of a prop. But I thought by posting a picture of it, it might give others some ideas when it comes to decorating boxes.......engraving and colorfilling aren't the only ways to go.

Very pretty. I like the imagery - makes me think of astrolabes and alchemy.

Pretty cool. I'd wager there's good sales potential there, if you made them as functional boxes and marketed them to the right customers. Maybe with a custom option, for a name or whatever.

Very clever idea. The art is also intriguing.

The box looks amazing and I would say it leans toward being Steampunk. There are two types of Steampunk props (?) cheap just spray something with brass paint types and they don't fetch much. The other type is what people have spent time doing and the piece is interesting and rare and those fetch a very good dollar.. Just my 2 cents..

I think it's Tealc's heart or maybe a piece to Atlantis.

Hmmm "Steampunk"?? My new word for the day.. What the Hec is Steampunk anyway (is my age showing)?
Some 'world of warfare' or 'dungeons and dragons' nerd may pay big money for that.. maybe..

Nice job and a great design Steve :)

Have you thought about making the design as inlay ?

@ Bill, I know what you mean :D

I had to look up "steampunk" too - although wiki says it has been around for ages, it had passed me by completely!

Steampunk products seem to go for quite a premium and I've lots of ideas, but the market could be rather small as so many haven't heard of it. I will ask my daughter at the weekend, see what she thinks.

Meanwhile, google steampunk images - there is a fantastic mahogany-and-brass laptop, among other amazing things.

Having the decoration NOT inlaid on Steve's box certainly goes with the steampunk image : a bead or metal strip along the corners to cover up the edges of the Romark would tidy it up though.

Nice work, Steve, certainly a new direction! I love the energy of the design.

About the corners - how about bending the Rowmark around the edges and making the joints just slightly past the corners so they can be part of the design (ie: not just plain straight cut lines, where a jewel is set, etc.) Of course I'm assuming you can bend Rowmark like you bend acrylic...

I love Steampunk, particularly the clothing! Just out of curiosity, Steve, did you have Steampunk in mind when you designed the boxes? If not you are just naturally a Steampunker. Regarding the market, take a minute (or three) to check out Seampunk Workshop. There are some etched pieces that may give you some ideas. Maybe someone will build a Steampunk laser. . .

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Science_fiction) and speculative fiction (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Speculative_fiction), frequently featuring elements of fantasy (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Fantasy), that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Steam_power) is still widely used — usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Victorian_era) Britain (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/United_Kingdom)[citation needed (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)] — but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/H._G._Wells) and Jules Verne (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Jules_Verne), or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Alternate_history)-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Airship), analog computers (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Analog_computer), or digital mechanical computers (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Mechanical_computer) (such as Charles Babbage (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Charles_Babbage)'s Analytical engine (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/wiki/Analytical_engine)); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality.

With a few extra minutes and a beveler, you could make those corners really tight... I think that would take it from "sweeeeeet" to "awesooooome"! Definitely digging the Stargate/Orrery feel (not Steampunk, IMO, though... Steampunk needs brass gears, optics, copper coils, etc.).

I wish someone would come to me with such a project... I'd have a lot of fun creating it.

Dan, I agree on the Stargate feel. When I look at the box I see stylized gears and cogs. The jewels, to me, did look like optics. Eye of the beholder I guess. :)

Dan! So now I know what to do with all those extra watch parts I have in storage. No, really, I used to clean and repair watches but no more...old eyes. I keep meaning to get rid of those tiny gears and arms. I love the looks of that flash drive - very cool!

Dee,

A lot of Steampunk jewelry incoporates watch parts. Watch parts are in pretty high demand because they're getting really hard to find.

It's actually a prop for a TV show called "Legend of the Seeker" and it's the first of the three "Boxes of Orden". My customer wanted it made so he could use it as part of his costume.

The real Boxes of Orden prop (one of many sets they had for the show, I'm sure) just sold on E-Bay for $2,800 or so. Here are pictures of the box from the show that was the inspiration for mine.

Dee,

If you ever decide to get rid of those parts, I'd be happy to take them off of your hands :) My grandfather was a master watchmaker, as well as having worked for the naval yards in Indiana... he had a lot of really cool stuff. People look at you funny when you hold up a piece of precision-cut glass and say it's a bomb sight for a B-32 bomber ;-)

Ok that's just awesome I looked at and went that looks like its from Legend of the Seeker. I make it to the second page and go yup thought so very cool and awesome job at making it. The TV show was awesome but only lasted 2 seasons.
