Here's one of the things I turned in the three day course I took with Jimmy Clewes. This is a variation of the Asian box that he is somewhat known for. I chose to turn up the edges of the lid and use a rectangular contrasting knob. It's cherry and rosewood and measures about 8x3x3.

I'm also experimenting with a black background. What do you think?

I think it's great. Both the piece and the photo. Great work!

Very nice. I like how the globe goes through the base.
I vote for the blk background for lighter wood tones.

David - congrats on being able to take some lessons! Very nice looking turning! Your black background works well with the lighter colored wood!

I am jealous. That had to be a great experience.

That is one sweet piece.

Very creative, and well executed form. Lovely wood, and the square nob just sets it off. Impressive all the way around!

Very creative and I would love to make one like that.I've been thinking about it for a while now but just haven't done so yet.I don't think mine would turn out quite that nice though.Yours is great.

Very well done!! You got those hemispheres dead on!! Impressive, and tricky I bet!

I like the dark background, but with the straight on shot I think it worked well with the lighter background. Perhaps it would work with a little different lighting.

I'm jealous too. I think you've pretty much nailed the form.

Well done David and thanks for posting and for responding to my question about his classes. I don't know what your level of skill was before you took his class, but regardless, you've got turning skills! I'm glad the class was fun and you obviously learned a lot. Your comments about him and his wife being so hospitable really nailed it for me. He looks like he can teach well and make it fun at the same time, a good combination for my personality. Thanks again David and great job with your turning.

David,
That's a beautiful job of your oriental box, and a nice change with turning the corners up. I have the one I did from 'class', and it's turned down as he instructed, but the other box he did had a turned up lid like that, and I like the look of that 'hybrid' if you will.

Ok...now the question is...did you crank it up to about 3000 rpm as he was doing and get the full 'propeller' effect?? :D:D

I'm sure you had a blast, I know our group did a month back.

Don't remember if I made to 3000, but I do remember thinking of the family of the person whose lathe was in front of me and wondering if they would forgive me if I launched that box into their loved one:eek:
