I saw this design in 1 solid wood, w/out the 3-D at the clock insert. This is lacewood on maple, and turned out ok, but....... I have this hangup with symmetry and am really tempted to create a matching base, channeling some lacewood into maple to account for what I cut off.

I's asking you to vote base or no base and of course all comments are fair game. the wood is 5", and the clock is 2 1/8th. Finish is a coat of sanding sealer, shellac (LOVE that smell) and wax. I did not put together a buffer yet, so the grain was not filled, and has a very open appearance.
One of these days, I swear I'll get the real camera out. Promise!

Thx for looking.

I would absolutely put a base under it. Matching the dark wood and thick enough to equal the amount of dark wood at the sides of the clock. Maybe even slightly more. Play with it but before you invest in glue...

Must be a Joker in the deck because it is now 5 of a kind.

Think I would tilt it back some, just my opinion.:)

There is a slight angle back - cant see it due to lack of photography skills... It doesnt look centered L to R but of course it must be (is).
Here is the model by nova......! I think I nailed the proportions pretty good but the maple protruding is what throws it off....maybe:confused:

I agree that the maple is throwing everything off - but you work with what you have. Another vote for a matching - dark - base.

Just Kidding, another vote for a base.
